1969-1971 Kawasaki H1 500 (MachIII)

This post is for the 1969 to 1971 Kawasaki 500 H1 MachIII. Please post up pix, stories, tips, tricks and related about your H1. Please keep it to the 69-71 H1 only in this thread. Thank you.

In late 1968 when Kawasaki released the MachIII, Cycle Mag later coined it on the front cover as "The Worlds Fastest Touring 500". For just under a thousand bucks ($999), you could own a modern day street rocket ship that would propel the rider to speeds unseen on a production bike the size.

My first street bike was 1971. I have loved and owned triples for over 30 years. They are not only one of my favorite iconic bikes of the early 70's, but today still highly collectable in restored or original condition.

The 1969 (White/blue) was badged with the MachIII emblem, as was the 1970 (Peacock Grey or Candy Red/white). The 1971 changed from the sculpted tank and rebadged with a matrix decal on the side covers and tank.

While the first three years retain many common components, the bike changed in later years as technology advanced. Without a doubt though, this bike really set Kawasaki apart from even Honda who introduced the K0 Sandcast the same year.

Here's a couple pix of mine, please share yours (stories and tips) as well.

1970 (Red) and chopped up 1971 (white) not restored yet. The 71 will be made into an H1-R Tribute bike instead since we have a pristine 71 already.

My dad bugged and bugged my grandmother's neighbor in Nipomo for the triple she'd kept of her late husband's for years. A few months ago she finally relented and he picked it up. He just had the frame powdercoated and is working on the resto. I'll ask the year and post some pics if he sends em to me.

Old & In the Way
Why limit this to 69-71, Papi? It's not as if the '73 was a substantially different bike. Yes, a little "tamer", but that's certainly a relative term, and not necessarily a bad thing, either.

Besides, that year they finally got the color right! :p

it's difficult to 'splain to the young'uns just how scary-fast the first H1 was

+ it performed SO differently from a CB750

as an early '70s AFM 500 proddy racer, I had ample opportunities to watch em blast past whatever I was riding down the straights, only to be caught in the corners

what an impact they had on the streets & schoolyards......

I've got a '72 500 that needs some love. Anyone know a good place to get the fork tubes re-chromed or a good replacement? Not too worried about staying original, it's too modded for that.

Got it in '88 on summer break (had a buddy with a 750 Water buffalo, rode some rd 350's/400 and GT380 and loved 'em). Rebuilt it in my dorm room (classic) then went through the motor again after college. Falicon reebuilt the crank and seals, had Paul Gast do some minor porting on the barrels and pistons, trussed the swingarm (cause they flex like a noodle) and put in heavy clutch springs. had it on the street in NYC (where I lived) and some asshat knocked it over while parking putting a big dent in the tank. Rode a 900ss Duc and switched over to that format for a street bike and the H-1 sat around.

One of my employees just got a really nice RT300 with RD 350 jugs and it sounds so nice. Got me yearning for that 500 again, gotta' get back into it...hopefully the seals aren't rotted away again.

Hey Papi! Are you selling one of your collection?

Nope, but, I've talked to this guy already. While I'd like to have another, my plate is pretty full right now. I have three more triples to finish restoring still.

make sure you put in new crank seals....them puppies fail regularly...

Never amazes me the amount of folks who fail to put oil in the injector tank; or the injector fails & they are not aware of it. Seizure City...

I had to replace both above several times....

Heres a few more in the bay area!!

Here is my crank rebuilding website as well as some of the bikes up at the junction in May. The 69 at the end is my trophy H1 and nicest bike to date . overcromed over polished over tuned!!!:cool
