06 KX 450 timing problems?

Put a new piston and rings in my 450. Timing marks lined up, valve clearance good. It runs decent cold with the choke on but when I turn off the choke it pops and seems to run lean as shit. Long time two stroke junkie here doing my first thumper rebuild. Pretty mechanically inclined, everything seems in order so I'm stumped............ Help please

Was the compression bad before? Did someone jet the bike for bad compression? (Unless its FI then I'm stumped too.)

No compression issues before. Forgot to mention I bought a complete lower end because my chain punched a whole in the case when it broke. I put my cylinder and head on it and decided to put piston and rings while I was there.

If it has a carburetor, I would look at the pilot jet and give the carb a good cleaning. It could have gummed up while you were doing the rebuild. Assuming it sat for awhile.

Sure have.... that's why I'm totally stumped. As far as I can tell everything is in order.

Check the stator magnet too. Had a similar issue on one and the magnet went out so spark was inconsistent when it would start.

I was thinking about that also ,maybe the stator bolt came loose and it could shift slightly and knock the ignition timing off?

When I did it the actual magnet lost its magnetic ability. Took forever to figure out. Unlikely but it does happen.

Are you positive the pilot jet isn't clogged...sometimes you need to run a small wire through it to clean it out.
