Quick update:

Zora is 5 months old now and doing very well.

A little bigger now, but still enjoys snuggling with each of us for as long as she can get. It was suggested that the breed did not like or respond to crate training, but Zora took to it on her own. Early on she walked into the crate whenever she was tired. She's amazingly calm while inside the house. She has her puppy energy of course, but after 5min she returns to 'normal' (we fully understand that 'normal' means nothing at this age).

When bought outside she has about one hour of energy before she starts slowing down and falls asleep.

Pretty sure I heard her laughing at your silly fence, which is supposed to keep her in the back yard. She's suggesting a raw diet or she may need to go look on her own.

How's training going?

Nothing formal / in person yet. She's been pretty quick to catch on when we expose her to new tasks. When in the backyard at home she'll fetch her toys and 'drop it' when I tell her too. You can see her fighting her urges, and occasionally she'll give into them, but for the most part she enjoys the praise for dropping it more than the toy itself.

Leash training is a bitch. She's not having any of it. She pulls very mildly when at home and on our cul de sac, but once in 'public' she looses her mind! We're trying one of those over the snout leashes to see if that helps.

At home she will respond to treats and praise, in public...not so much.

One of my neighbors, an older guy with a heavy German accent, stopped me one day walking our dog. He'd noticed her pulling and gave me some advice. Turns out he had German Shepards since he was a kid, and showed my to hold the leash a couple feet short and swing the end in a circle with the dog walking behind. Basically like a propeller that would smack the dog if they tried to walk through it. You don't even have to swing it hard or fast, just the fact it is there seems to work.

The other thing he mentioned was to use the classic choke chain, and went on passionately in his heavy accent that it had to be quality "German Steel" because it was the sound of it that was the key. Never followed up on this because it's my wife's dog and she doesn't like them, but clearly this guy knew his stuff.

I like 'Askem'.

When someone asks you what your dogs name is, you say Askem, then they say "no really, what is your dog's name?"

Then you say "just Askem".

Continue as needed until they figure it out.
