Vehicular assault thread

Hey All,

I am working on a two wheel safety project where seeing your on bike video footage of any vehicular assault by a motorist towards you would be good information to have.

1. Blocking lane splitting (on purpose)
2. Aggressive actions toward lane splitters (Assault)
3. General aggressive actions towards riders (Assault)
4. Motorists assault on bicyclist that you may have captured.

I know there are some on youtube obviously so if you want to share those here that is OK. Just please confirm when posting that it is not you.

Having vid's from you provides a better resource as far as potential back up if necessary to prove our point. The goal is to get DA offices to prosecute attempts that did not involve a collision, but have evidence of intent to harm.
Also to document repeat offenders as almost none are prosecuted for just an attempt to harm.

More info will be shared soon on how we are going to help another organization do this.

Experienced 1 & 2 last Friday, wish I had a camera. 101 North through Santa Rosa, 20 something in a newer maroon mustang ran me off the road twice in the rain because I made it around him in traffic.

No cam - bad on me, and I'll fix that in the future.

I experienced 1 and two, where the CHP took care of it right away (hwy 80) but I have no idea if the drivers were prosecuted.

Soren,

This big part of this is because the offending aggressive drivers are not being prosecuted. The Bicycle group I am going to work with has been pushing hard with little success and pretty politically active. Perhaps us moto folks doing the same will change that.

It took a big dirt bike wreck to finally push me to get a Leatt brace.
This thread may be what it takes to get me to start adding a camera to my commute.

Hi Butch,

Some of our members recommend the YI action cameras; one is included in list you linked to. They tell us the YI 4K has outstanding resolution and Amazon is selling it for $115 so it's much less expensive than a GoPro.

You can watch one of our members discuss his experience using his YI 4K as a technical round table panelist during our 11/1 Alameda County town hall: Best Practices for Riding with a Video Camera. The first half of the town hall explains the game changing importance of riding with a camera and the second half is the technical round table.

I'm thinking about getting some helmet cams soon (for both moto and bicycle), so I was curious about this. I watched the entire 2-hour video and it's prolly going to be TLDW for most. For me, these are my takeaways:

0:24:00-ish "There's a huge potential population that are ... justifiably too afraid to ride"

0:26:40 "Our mission is to give all cyclists the tools, support, and confidence to ride on the roads."

Further, with using cameras and their online reporting system, their goals are to:

"... Identify repeat offenders and establish patterns of behavior before collisions occur",
"... Ensure cycling safety laws are enforced before collisions occur",
"... Hold law enforcement accountable for enforcing the laws for cyclist safety",
"... Provide government agencies near-miss data", and
"... Save cyclists and drivers from life-altering tragedies".

(Note that they applaud LEO's, but understand that it's easier to enforce laws with evidence -- [my words])

To do all of these they want cyclists to report near-miss incidents and to include video when possible.

0:33:20 "If it makes you afraid you should submit the incident [into their online system]."

--

0:59:40 For the town-hall meeting, this was one of the goals: "Identify and create resources that help all cyclists ride with cameras and submit incidents reports."

--

1:12:40 Fly6 Camera (Old version): the new 1080p version is better

1:13:30 YI Action Cameras: several 4k models, cheap, $70+, looping, fussier to use, 90 min battery capacity

--

1:27:20 New Fly6 Camera: easy attachment, charging, rain when improperly closed is a problem, $180

The Fly12 Camera: bigger, $280, battery lasts longer than with the Fly6, better rain protection

The cyclist's group did a bulk order with 30% off. A couple of discounts were mentioned.

--

1:38:18 Contour Camera & Helmet Cams in general
-The Countour seems to be good in the rain, uses an SD card

-Helmet cams are more visible and seems to make others be more respectful
-1080 resolution minimum for easy license plate reading
-Helmet cams make it easier to record a legible license plate

1:49:45 Fly6: bad at night... most cameras are bad at night

1:54:45 Sony Action Cam: nice mounting options

Grateful for this work Budman! As a cyclist and motorcyclist, this is a natural pairing. CVE - great article. Their description of both types of bikers as vulnerable road users was right on. I'm getting a dash cam setup now after my own little road interaction, so hopefully I'll soon be helping the cause.

Welcome to the CVE community Benea!

We need as many motorcyclists, and cyclists, reporting all near miss incidents as possible to create safe shared streets for all vulnerable roads users. Please help spread the word and encourage others to always ride with a camera and submit their near miss incident reports, even if they don't report them to the police. The more we can identify dangerous areas, with objective video evidence, the better traffic planners can understand the real risks we face so they can design safe shared streets.

Please also consider donating to help sustain our work. :ride

Cheez: those two incidents are both assault and reckless driving so they should always be reported to law enforcement. If they are not reported then those specific drivers will continue assaulting other motorcyclists with a sense of impunity and possibly encourage other drivers around them to follow their behavior.

Please join our free membership and submit incident reports for each of those criminal near miss incidents to our Incident Management System so they can be identified as repeat offenders should they assault you or anyone else in the future. Unlike posting on YouTube or in a forum, our IMS allows users to track, analyze, update and map their near miss incident reports. It also allows all cyclists to search for repeat offenders.
