Underberg!

How have I gone this long without ever having heard of this magical elixir? We first had some in Tahoe after feasting at a German restaurant. A little after-dinner shot of this juice and those giant beers and mounds of food all just seems to settle in. If you are at a bar and see these little wrapped bottles, ask for one.

I've also learned that there is a whole underground Underberg economy. I want to open a bar just so I can have an excuse to get enough bottle tops for those cool long stem glasses and maybe a bandolier.

I was expecting something slightly different from our resident sewage expert, but this definitely seems better.

I think you have me mixed up with someone else. But, yes, a giant wad of undies clogging up our sewers is not as appetizing. But, a shot of Underberg would take care of that!

Restaurant/F&B peeps know about these.

Had fried chicken and mashed potatoes for family meal before a beast of an evening? Throw one of these back and you'll make it through the night without feeling comatose. If anything, it'll freshen your breath and wake you up for a bit.

Chartreuse VEP will forever be linked with Underberg in my mind for whatever reason - likely as it's just one of those things that people look past and don't seem to appreciate and the "secret" herbal aspect/element.

If it's closer to Chartreuse, then I'm back onboard. I've enjoyed that no many occasions. Other digestives just taste like stomach bile to me.

Oh no, Underberg is stomach bile for sure. :laughing

Just was referring to the herbal aspect and the fact that it's a really nice tool when used as intended.

I once bought a little bottle at the taphouse in Berkeley because I thought the bottle looked neat. But I never tried it and the girl I went with took both home lol.

I see that I can order them off of Amazon, how does everyone drink these? Cold? Room temp? Before or after a meal? Just curious

Shoot it down after a heavy meal. Room temp is fine, chilled probably better. You don't drink it to taste it. It's much closer to a medicine in my opinion than an actual drink.

Fucking disgusting tasting

Can't disagree; but we all said that about alcohol when we were lads didn't we? It's an "acquired taste" for sure.

I didn’t think it was too terrible tasting. I liked the complexity of the herbal mixture.

It’s not something I’d drink just for the flavor though. Like Keith says, it’s best used almost like a medicine after a big hearty meal.

Agreed, but I've never taken to any anise, herbal or similar alcoholic beverages. Raki, Ouzo, Arak, Fernet, Jagermeister, etc....blah.

Found it at BevMo. Interesting fact: it’s classified as a food product in the US, despite its 44% ABV. It was steadily available during prohibition. Even today anyone can buy it.
