Tire life?..

So I got these supercorsas from my buddy, thread looks super great! He said they’ve been sitting for a few years. Date on them is 3313 I gotta them mounted on my 675R but they feel like crap. I can’t even get close to full lean. I thought maybe I forgot to ride or something but I’m pretty sure it’s the tires.

Is it possible for a tire to go off from sitting too long? Thanks!

The fresher the tires, the better the grip.
Most tires don't lose much grip for the first few years.
7 year old tires will have a lot less grip than a 2 year old tire when the tires are stored the same way.
Storing any tire in a non-climate controlled storage will cause it to "age" quicker than a tire stored in a more controlled climate storage as heating the tire can cause the tire to age faster.
Since I generally have no idea how a tire has been stored, I generally will not mount tires that are more than 2 years old.

Yeah, I would toss any tires with a 2013 date. The last experience I've had with old tires was a bike I bought last summer with 12 year old tires. I rode it 300 miles to get it home then tossed those out and bought new tires.

ive been sold a brand-new 5yr old race tire by the national rep. it worked great as it was brand-new and stored properly. no way in hell I would run a used tire stored that long.

Just curious..... What is your definition of "feels like crap"?

You indicate that you cant get close to full lean. Why is that? They don't seem to be slipping on you. Could it be that you have never used this particular brand and model and profile?

Im sure you are aware that not all tires, regardless of the similarity in size, are the same in shape/profile. For example, some 180s are wider than other 180s. In my personal experience, I run a 160-60 on my trackbike. I ran a Dunlop Q3 at Thill and used the tire to its extreme edges. The next tire was a Pirelli Corsa Rosso. I ran the same bike on the same track but didnt get to the edges of the tires.

Regarding the age of the tires. They are pretty old to be running hard. Especially if they have been heat cycled a few times. I once ran hard a set of 7 year old tires and they slipped on me slightly while riding the roads at Alices. I hate to say it but I knew better. :afm199

Cheers!
