The Faith In Humanity Thread

Facebook's news feed is getting me down with nothing but posts about the terrorist attack in Boston, conspiracy theories about the attack, political bullshit, etc. The comic strips/GIFs/entertainment threads only make you chuckle so much. It's a brief second of mindless entertainment. I'd like this thread to instead be inspirational, heartfelt, videos or pictures that make you tear up with warm fuzzies at the lengths people will go to for each other, for strangers, for loved ones.

I ask that any contributions to this thread be more than just a link. Provide some sort of brief summary with a link to the full story, a video if available, and one or two pictures with links to the albums. Put some time and effort into each post, this isn't Instagram. Thank you.

I'm going to start off with a video of Jack Hoffman, a 7 year old with brain cancer, running a 69 yard touchdown:

Link to his story.
Upper Deck said:
"Jack had a larger than life moment on the field that day for Nebraska which is why Upper Deck is creating a limited number of promotional blow-up rookie cards for Jack to sign and use for charitable purposes," Chris Carlin, Upper Deck's sports marketing manager, said in a statement. "Upper Deck is proud to play a small role increasing awareness in Jack's cause and we are excited to be a part of 'Team Jack!'"

Team Hoyt:
Rick was born in 1962 to Dick and Judy Hoyt. As a result of oxygen deprivation to Rick's brain at the time of his birth, Rick was diagnosed as a spastic quadriplegic with cerebral palsy. Dick and Judy were advised to institutionalize Rick because there was no chance of him recovering, and little hope for Rick to live a "normal" life. This was just the beginning of Dick and Judy's quest for Rick's inclusion in community, sports, education and one day, the workplace.

......................................

In the spring of 1977, Rick told his father that he wanted to participate in a 5-mile benefit run for a Lacrosse player who had been paralyzed in an accident. Far from being a long-distance runner, Dick agreed to push Rick in his wheelchair and they finished all 5 miles, coming in next to last. That night, Rick told his father, "Dad, when I'm running, it feels like I'm not handicapped."

This realization was just the beginning of what would become over 1,000 races completed, including marathons, duathlons and triathlons (6 of them being Ironman competitions). Also adding to their list of achievements, Dick and Rick biked and ran across the U.S. in 1992, completing a full 3,735 miles in 45 days.

The Hoyts were at the Boston Marathon, but stopped 1 mile short of the finish line as the bombs went off. They received help from bystanders to carry Rick back into their hotel.

Taylor Morris (and his girlfriend):

After graduating high school in 2007, Taylor joined the Navy with hopes of making it into Special Operations. Those who know him best know he always sets out to conquer the hardest and most challenging tasks. Taylor ultimately found his passion as a Navy EOD tech. EOD stands for Explosive Ordinance Disposal, which meant Taylor was trained to know the ins and outs of bombs. He began rigorous EOD training throughout the United States in 2008 and graduated July 24th, 2009. Since then, he has been stationed in Virginia Beach, VA, where he has been continuing his education and training as a EOD tech.In January of 2012, Taylor was deployed on his first tour to Afghanistan, set to return August 2012. We always wanted him to come back as soon as possible, missing his energetic spirit and love of life, but we never imagined it would be under these circumstances. On May 3, 2012, Taylor was injured in action. The injuries were profound, but he stayed conscious immediately afterwards. He was able to tell his partner to call Danielle and family to tell them everything. He sustained injuries to all four limbs, entailing loss of both legs, left arm from the bicep down, and right hand.Taylor is currently receiving medical care and Rehab at Walter Reed Medical Center, near Washington DC.

Tragedy happens to many. What really pulls at me with Taylor's story is the emotional strength and support from his family and particularly girlfriend. It's nothing short of incredible. I posted the photo blog of his story on here a while back and I'm posting it again here. It's a heart wrenching example of some of the best true love has to offer.

Sometimes it doesn't have to be a monumental testament to human kindness and compassion. A wall is built brick by brick, and every little bit helps.

Back when I worked in The City (80's), every once & awhile someone in a cage would pay my toll. I'd get to the booth & the guy would say "your paid!" I'd surprisingly just motor on w/o hardly a slow down. Sometimes I would see it & catch the cager on the bridge & give him a big thumbs-up & a big thank you!

Would make my day every time....:thumbup
