Sporty roads north of Calistoga, CA area

Hello all,

And thanks for all of your suggestions, it was much appreciated.

The day of my ride it was supper toasty… upper 90’s by noon and my energy fades fast in that kind of heat so I tried to keep my ride on the short side. I started out in Calistoga around 7:30 and went north on 29 to Middletown. I’ve driven that rode in a car a few times and always found it a bit of a drag, too many slow cars and not enough places to pass but on a bike it’s a totally different story. You can really get it laid over all the way to the edge of the tires… loved it. I just wish this was closer to SF so I could make it a part normal weekend rides.

Then I turned south down Butts Canyon Rd to Pope Valley to Chiles Pope Valley Rd. I was planning on turning East on 128 and running up to Lake Berryessa but I totally missed the sign and wound up back on Silverado Trail heading South. I didn’t pull over and check my phone until I was almost down to Vichy Springs. I stretched my legs a bit & examined my location and just decided to backtrack my way to Calistoga. I could see there were plenty of other options but the heat was starting to rise quickly so I just wanted to get moving again.

It was fun morning ride for sure, but the landscape from Butts Canyon all the way down to Sage Canyon was a little eerie and kind of surreal. Hardly any vegetation at all just dried out grass and dead blackened tree trunks.

I’d love to explore more of the area sometime.

Thanks again to everyone that took the time to reply.
