I guess it has been a while so I should post up the results of my last follow-up and give some thanks where due.
I would like to start out by thanking everyone for even being interested in follow a story such as mine or Adam's, Ozymandias'. BARF and the motorcycling community in general are just plain awesome!
There was an idea that since I wouldn't allow anyone to give me any handouts that we would have a raffle in order to raise a bit of money to offset my lack of earning. I was going to buy a new scooter and also offer up some other cool prizes. Well, that fell through as I decided that rather than running a raffle I should be focused on healing and getting back to normal.
There were many people who offered to help me with the raffle and I would like to thank them here: Budman- who offered up a banner on BARF once I got the raffle rolling, Lance and Linda Keigwin- they gave me a very cool autographed helmet. If you don't know them, they are the coolest track day providers! I spent most of my time at the track with them and the Keigwin family of instructors are nonpareil!
Most of all, thanks to my riding buddy, fellow AFM/WERA racer and BARFer Quinton, Quinton Jones for offering to head up this raffle even though he is so busy that he is only home enough during the year to just barely use his Keigwin VIP pass!
At one point, he and I were fairly close in our riding and even though I am stoked to see him just get faster and faster, moving up with the big boys, it sucks to know I am not progressing with him!
Thanks to irishgixxer for the photo. I think I can see my twisted foot up against the window....eeeewwwww!
I saw the doctor on June 24th and had the external fixator removed. One of the pins had become loose and painful. He removed it with his fingers! He used a tool to remove the other one but since I have no sensation on the left side it was completely painless. Thanks for small miracles.
He seems to think that I am healing but the x-rays don't really show that type of bone where my repairs are that well.
What do you think?
As you can see, there is much more extensive hardware than before. He even left any extra washer in there for good measure!
(Said it wasn't worth cutting me open to remove it)
He asked that I don't walk on it for a couple more weeks and then only with a walker. I have the holes where the pins were which are now oozing wounds that are slow to heal. Can't blame them. I spent six weeks bandaging them in a way that was to prevent them from healing around the pins.
I can now shower, which if you haven't ever been restricted from that, you really do take for granted.
I am hoping I will be walking well by the middle of next month as I have a 25 year reunion with a ship I was a first crew member of (called a Plankowner) on August 19th in San Diego. USS Bunker Hill CG-52. She was the first ship with vertical launch missles and was the first to launch Tomahawks in the first gulf war. Pride runs strong on that ship and I can't wait to see all of my old shipmates again. A warship is difficult to move around in when you are healthy and probably impossible if not. Fingers crossed.
I went to the AFM races last weekend and saw many of you. It was so cool to get out into the paddock again. I watched most of the races from the announcer's booth and just had a great time! I realized that if I were to ever ride again it would only be to race. I figured out that the stalking, executing a pass and making it stick is what motorcycling is for me.
I couldn't just putt around the track. I will give it a few years and revisit the issue then.
Time just ticks away here. My spirits are up and people tell me I look good. I think it's just because I shaved off my beard which makes me look 15 years older.
Thanks again to all for the positive thought and prayers!
Hopefully the drama of my recovery will taper off and so will my reasons to add to this thread.
Thanks all for keeping up!
Cheers!!!
