Rona and the Road

I guess I did not write up last weekends ride, so.. after putting another GB500guy report in the trip reports sticky I thought.. damn. I should.

This ride was going to be a long one. A rally miles type of ride.

My brother D.. L8Braker and I had gone out the weekend before for a shorter ride and it was very cool to be out riding again. We ran into Dr SLO that day and we made plans to go ride Hwy 25 and then 198 to Coalinga.. get gas and come back.

Danny had his son that weekend so Dad asked if it was cool to bring him..?

Of course!! His son GT rides dirt with Dad and has been on the back of his Ninja before so all good. He had never gone this kind of distance though.

SLO came by my office at 9:30 and we went to meet Danny and GT in Santa Clara.

Off we went... but we decided to shorten the slabbing part by heading out to Uvas to get some twisties in before getting to Hollister.

We had a nice loop.. noting that the parks were pretty full along the way.

Once on 152 we headed East back to 101. Along the way a young man on a small dirt bike came the other way on one wheel. I happened to be in front and standing up and gave him a :thumbup

He then took his left hand off the bar returning the thumbup while passing me on one wheel. Nice..:thumbup

It was a smallish bike and he was smallish too. My bet too young to be on a public road let alone on a dirt bike and on one wheel! :laughing

He went by all of us on one wheel. I smiled.. big! :teeth

When we got to Hollister we had to gas for the roll to Coalinga.
Leaving the Gas station we had a interesting situation. Nothing extreme or worthy really, but hell I posted it so may as well link it. :laughing

The weather was gorgeous and we rolled down a mostly empty 25.
Danny had asked me to do a high speed fly by to show GT that old men can still be crazy. :loco

After asking if it might startle him he said "No way.. I ride a little quick with him sometimes and he is good so......No problemo bro!!".

The plan was to pack a lunch and stop for a picnic.. I thought that Peach Tree Road would be a good spot.

25 is fun... not the epic flowing twisties that some roads offer, but 198 is the bomb and I was expecting little traffic.

The pace was just fun and Danny was not really behind unless we wicked it up for a bit. On one of the long straights Danny passed me and I knew fly by time was here.. so fly by I did. NSFW speed so :dunno how fast.. :laughing

We were ready for a break when we got to the end of 25 and hit up Peach Tree. Lunch was interesting you could say. GT was not hip to sitting in the grass with little bugs around, but SLO, D and I had no problem with that.

SLO started unpacking for lunch. My God he brought a little stove!!! :cool
He was going to have a hot lunch!! Nice.

I pulled my Turkey sammich out and noted the paper was wet :mad

Sure enough about 1/2 was edible.. crap. :nchantr
So 1/2 a sammich, some chips and water was going to have to do.

We had a nice time.. of course we chatted up SLO on the Rona.
His information shared here on BARF has been so awesome. This was a chance to dive into a bit of that.

I have know Danny since '89 and SLO joined my world in '08. I still remember our first real conversation being at a Hawthorne Rally that year.
I was amazed how intelligent this man was.. We chatted science for over an hour that night. The Brit is a smart cookie besides a capable rider and nice guy. ;)

After packing up the camping gear...:laughing
We left to hit 198. It was all I expected.. awesome. Empty..clean.
That road is so well engineered and in most places gives you a good sight line which always feels good.

I rode a really good sporting pace and then we would wait for Danny to catch up on the straights. A sports car thought he was the shit... and we showed him.. no your not bro. :laughing

We dipped into Coalinga and got gas. An older X racer (older than me so OLD), chatted up SLO about his bike. I thought it was cute. :)

We then just turned around and came back. Big fun.. I love 198. I have never been on it when it was so empty and ready for me to have some full on 198 smiles. Fuck yeah! :ride

Once on 25 again.. we rolled for a while and kind of left Danny and GT behind. At that point GT was calling for a butt break, but they were too far behind so.. he just had to suck it up. That's what moto folks do right??

We slowed down to let them catch up in Tres Pinos and I will tell ya what.. my booty and back were happy to take a break too. We sat in the shade across from the 19th Hole for a bit. Our bikes on the road across the street.

A BMW rider parked next to us and came over to say hey.

It turned out to be a barfer....nrvale0. Good to meet you man. He was out doing ADV stuff for the day.

I could tell talking with GT he was a little tired.. heck so was I.
With being shut down for a while I was not in great riding shape.

Back to the same gas station to fill up for the slab ride home.
Once again the light did not turn for us.. and this time no officer was behind us so fook it.. we go.

I finally got home at 6pm with 340 miles of smiles under my belt.
A cold beer and some grub finished off a great day!

Later that night Danny texted me..

"Dude GT fell asleep as soon as he sat down. I woke him up at 8 to feed him and he did not even finish before dozing off again. I just got him up and said go to bed".. so lets see. 6PM to 8AM is a solid snooze!!! :laughing

He never complained and seemed to enjoy it. :cool

A few pics to share.

Good day.. life on two baby! :ride

Wait...waitwaitwait...is that Dr. Slo in the hat? Our Dr. Slo??

:wow

Never judge a person by their appearance.

Great report Dennis. PB&J travels well, but my Corn chips turned into cornmeal in the top box on Saturday.

:laughing The only person I'm judging here is me and and my pathetic (and stereotypical) vision of what a smart sciencey doctor who knows all about this Coronavirus crap actually looks like in real life!

That is a cool plate! Glad y'all got out for some fun and relaxation :thumbup
I was planning on taking my gray SM610 for a very remote and careful ride this weekend but DMV online won't let me register it even though it's insured. Planned to go to AAA today...nope, they're closed...D'oh! It's been on non-op for awhile...maybe that's it? I dunno...I'm sure I'll find something to ride :laughing
