rear tire slip and grip

On my last session at the Stockton motoplex, I was chasing a DRZ, when I went down in the sweeper. My back tire was breaking loose in the same spot on the track everytime I got on the gas leaving the apex. It sliped about 2in to 4ins, but would grab in the end, and this became the norm all day! When it broke loose during the fall it went fast and hard. There was no time to counter. I was sliding on my ass before I had any time to react. I am using my commute tires like a simp, Avon gripsters, chasing guys on slicks. But its all good! I also put on a new flatside carb which is a big increase in power.

My question is, if you feel this slip and grab, is it time to adjust your line for a smoother exit? Or do I need more time on the track? I assume its both. I'm going to try a new line this weekend after reviewing the helmet cam video 20 times! Any input would be helpful.

PS I'll never ride the street hard again without my track leathers!

dewd,

you were haulin the mail that day.....really much much faster than your bike should really go on a track like that.....

who knows why you got away with the little slides all day, except that once, - tiny bit more gas than the other times cause you were chasing someone; slightly tired, cause that happened later in the day, right?; track conditions changing as the surface cooled off late in the day, etc,.....

but one thing's for sure, a real DOT race tire or slick will generally give you more ability to get away with small slides on a consistent basis

of course, whatever you're riding, you can adjust your line to apex later, thereby getting the bike straight up and down sooner and getting to full throttle sooner, but you already know that

also, dood, this has nothing to do with your question, but check out my post in this thread and then take a look at your frame in that same spot,,,,

Avon street tires IMHO have an unfortunate tendency to really let go when they start to go off, and to stay greasy once they go.

XRL retired!

I'll keep a eye on the XRL at that leak point.
I've only got 10k, all in one year, but this bike is now my street ride only.
I broke down and bought a new track bike. KTM 560smr, feels like half the weight, twice the power.
The slicks should... out preform the Avons!:laughing
Test rode it on my street, scary fast!

As far as the wreck slydrite, Yes to all of the above. I countered one big slide at the end of the lefthand sweeper. But it didn't cut loose as fast, giving me time to counter steer, and get passed by that 12 yr girl. But it was early in the day, and I wasn't chasing anyone or tired.

Lesson learned!
