Random thoughts on bikes and riding

On day two of a 10 day trip I fired up my DRZ and noticed it dripping oil. Between me and my buddy we had a fair amount of tools. I got the sprocket cover off and determined oils was leaking from the countershaft seal.

One of the straps for my saddle bags had been flapping around the previous day and got caught by the chain and pulled into the front sprocket. Bike kept running and I only noticed when I was taking the bags off. Firm tug and out came the remainder of the strap which had melted and the cooled once we parked. I assumed that must have damaged the seal and ordered a new kit for overnight.

In the meantime I decided to get to work taking things apart so I'd be ready for the kit. I did have to borrow a breaker bar to get the countershaft nut off, good thing we weren't in the middle of knowhere. Turns out there was just some bits of strap stuck under the seal, pulled those out, no more leaks. Buttoned it back up, returned the breaker bar and rerouted the new seal to my house.

Without tools I'd have been looking at a tow to a town with a shop and probably the end of the trip. Instead, I bought lunch and dinner that day and we got back on route the next day.
