Question about registering a firearm from a deceased family member from another state..

Just like the title says. I was just curious if anyone knew the laws in California about procedure to owning and registering a firearm from a deceased family member from another state. A friend has an uncle from another state that passed away and he wanted a gun of his. Does anyone know what he might have to do in order to legally own it or would it be best to just take it off his aunts hand without paperwork? I couldnt find a definite answer anywhere. Thanks in advance.

Yea, thats essentially what I was going to say. Since it's interstate, being related doesn't seem to matter much -- it's just an interstate transfer.

I'm pretty sure the firearms have to be CA legal, not just AWs (which won't transfer), of course, but I don't know if you can transfer an off roster pistol from out of state, even from a family member.

That's fuzzy to me.
