This thread will be used to post informative podcasts about the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak and COVID. These are aimed at listeners who would like fact based information and discussion about the new coronavirus that is causing the current global pandemic.

The first few posts will be ones that I have already posted in the 'Corona Virus are you ready?' thread in the Kitchen Sink. This is highly recommended listening to help sort out the wheat from the chaff from the usual media outlets of your choice.

Earlier in this thread I had stated that asymptomatic spread had not been proven with the data at that time. However, Raplh Baric, a coronavirus expert, suggests that this could be the case, I presume based on additional evidence.

Most of the topics in this week's podcast have been discussed in this thread. For those who are interested in why the CDC failed in supplying test kits you can jump to 1:25:23 where a listener with information has written in and provides the details.

First up is a special with Mark Denison a pediatric infectious disease physician and coronavirologist. Fascinating insights and introduces a subtle way of thinking about virus infection a little differently. He also discusses his work on drugs against coronaviruses.

The This Week in Virology podcast has released a special with Ian Lipkin.

Dr. Lipkin is the John Snow Professor of Epidemiology, Professor of Neurology and Pathology and Cell Biology, and Director at the Center for Infection and Immunity internationally at Columbia. He is recognized as an authority on the use of molecular methods for pathogen discovery.

Ian is currently in the midst of suffering from COVID-19 and he talks about the issues surrounding the disease and SARS-CoV-2 including limiting transmission, antivirals, vaccines, and much more.

TWiV 603: Cloudy with a chance of coronavirus

More great information in episode 603 of TWiV from Daniel Griffin at the epicenter of the US outbreak in NYC. He provides some eye-opening information about new symptoms but also how the treatment of COVID is being approached. Also, Vincent rants about the proposal that SARS-CoV-2 was engineered in a lab. They also cover the seroprevalence study from Stanford that the media have picked up on. My personal critique of that paper can be found elsewhere.

TWiV 604: Oral poliovaccine to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection

Here's a real curiosity, could the oral polio vaccine help to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2? In TWiV 604 Kostya Chumakov discusses the hypothesis that oral poliovirus vaccine can provide non-specific protection against many other viruses, and might prevent infection with SARS-CoV-2.

TWiV 605: READDI for the next pandemic

Remdesivir seems to be having some success in the treatment of COVID-19. In TWiV 605 Ralph Baric, Mark Heise and Nat Moorman discuss their non-profit initiative READDI, Rapidly Emerging Antiviral Drug Discovery Initiative, that was partly involved in the development of remdesivir and is starting to make drugs now for the next pandemic virus.
