Two years ago I led a group past the road washout near mountain house using the narrow path cut into the south side of the hill next to the big hole in the road. This worked fine as it avoided the gravel detour and as a bonus gave us the rest of the road free of traffic. Question : Is this still a viable option?

Check with Caltrans. The road may be repaired by now. The path was probably removed during the construction as they had to excavate and back fill extensively.

Checked with both Caltrans and CHP. Both say that there is the detour around the washed out part of the highway and that there are no current plans to fix the washout. Called a m.c. shop in Oroville but no one seems to know if you can squeeze by.

How is the rest of 162?

I plan on being up there riding late next week around the 27th.

If planning to ride 162 your probably guna need gas in Oroville before heading up. Gold Country Casino is on 162 just before you cross the lake. The nice thing about filling up there is they have non California gas pumps. So you don't have to do the 2 handed pull back springy thing and fill like you have to do with all other Calif. gas pumps(at least I have to on my bike).

EDIT: At least the pump I used last week was like this. I didn't check them all.
