Agreed. For me, not understanding the leadership that Pavs and Jumbo provide, and letting them walk, was the final straw.

They kept Thornton around waaaay too long. I don't care how many assists he got, he passed up so many shots that the new "failure to initiate a scoring opportunity" trophy should be named after him. Pavelski was always going to walk at the end of his deal. He knew what the Sharks were capable of, and signing his last major contract with a contender (and an income tax free state, IMO) was more important. I wish he would've gone to Tampa for less $$, but he didn't consult me.

Ironically, and from business and hockey assessment alike; I completely disagree with everything you said...but I also completely agree with everything you said. That was a well stated post :thumbup

I only wish we lost one, not both.

So how do we feel about our current "stars" that have either been home grown, or been with us long enough that they are always sharks?

Couture, Hertl, Vlasic, Burns, Meier(kinda early).
Are they truly the top tier stars/leaders to carry the torch left behind by Jumbo, Pavs, and to an extent Patty?

Are they going to be the ones to carry this next generation to greater heights? Worth keeping on vs a complete rebuild?

The short answer, yes, keep Couture, Hertl, Burns, Meier. Burns is really the only player that can replace the leadership value that Pavs and Jumbo had due to his age and experience. Personally, I believed he was more deserved of the "C" over Couture, although Couture's Game 7 performance against VGK pretty much solidified the captaincy.

I think EK9 could become a solid on ice leader because despite his money issues, he still gives solid effort on the ice for essentially no salary.

Vlasic, as much as I like him as a person, has severely depreciated and become upside down on his contract. (still signed to 2026).

Add EK65 to the short list as well.

I didn't want to be the first to say that about pickles. He's been lackluster and almost non-existent this year. Which is great for a 2nd pair Dman, but that isn't what we paid for.

I like the effor EK9 puts in. But the announcers are always talking about how he's not quite up to conditioning standards yet this year. Could be injury related, or maybe he just lost a step. Could be COVID related training inthe offseason.

Burns i agree on the C. Couture seems too soft spoken for it. As for the future, i like Hertl/Meier to carry the touch. I'd like to see some more young home grown D-Men brought up.

I think more fans agree about Vlasic than they would want to admit in public, unfortunately, we are spending (IMO) $4m more than he provides.

Thankfully homegrown D are coming up; Nikolai Knyzhov has shown a lot of confidence at 22 along with Nicolas Meloche who looks to still be developing.

Added with Ryan Merkley coming up with the Cuda and I believe the Sharks back end will have a good showing within the next couple seasons.

And people boo Bettman. :wtf

Despite the sunshine making slush in the first period, which was hilarious to watch btw, what a great weekend!

Oh man, it's been a while! Haven't caught any games yet, but it sounds like another development year.

I can't speak to this year, but I feel Pickles has been steadily declining the last few years. He's been playing in the NHL since 18, and playing some of the hardest minutes against the league's top players. With enough post-season games to accumulate another 1.5 seasons! I agree his contract isn't "worth" his performance, so I view this as a guy getting his cheese. For me, it's the NMC that's the back breaker.

How are the young guns doing? Besides 48 and 28, any other guys I should look out for?

Agreed, Vlasic is a solid 3rd pair, maybe second, but unfortunately being paid as a 1st pairing.

The kids show promise, a lot of names that I did not anticipate too.

Ferraro, 22, WILL be a top pairing defenseman

Knyzhov, 22, could be 1st pairing, easily Top 4; got into a scrap tonight, didn't turn out well. :laughing A few butterfly stitches and he was back out there.

Leonard and Balcers, both 22, playing Top 6 and PP and still getting better.

Gregor, 22, looks to be a solid 3rd liner checker.

I hope to return to playoff standard in the next 2-3 seasons

Catch that game last night? The Sharks actually looked worse on the PP. The personnel just isn't there. It's like they have a #2 line, a #3 line, a 3.5 and then some scrubs. Ol' Randy Hahn loves talking about the lack of home ice, etc., but home ice ain't nothing in hockey, especially with no fans. If they crawl away from the bottom of the standings I'll be amazed.

Thanks for the scouting report. I need to catch a game. A little terrifying knowing some of these kids don’t even combine for a season worth of games :laughing At least they’re getting more play time.

Anyone watching Connor McDavid? Kid is on another level!

I argue that home ice does have it's place in a structural dynamic. Visiting team usually plays on the zamboni entrance/exit which compromises the ice on that end. Also, home teams are more familiar with the board rebound and reaction.

Same time, I agree, now is a time more than ever when teams are more level since home teams can't feed off fan energy.

Frankly, visiting teams are exploiting the Sharks for lack of defense and backcheck.

You're welcome, and I'll add that although painful to watch at time (team as a whole), it's entertaining to see the kids pull some shit and make stuff happen. Ferraro is leading the way in that dept!

Cool response from Foligno on the fight with Knyzhov
