Any bike can get high speed wobble, especially when loaded improperly (against manufacturer instructions). Harley. Honda. Kawi. BMW. Yami.

You really mean:

0600 - 0800: Write 5 tickets
1000 - 1030: First stop at Starbucks
1030 - 1200: Write 2-3 tickets
1200 - 1400: Lunch break
1400 - 1500: Second stop at Starbucks
1500 - 1600: Return to station to “turn in tickets”
1600: Off-duty, commute on Department motorcycle

Indeed. But when's the last time that you heard about it happening with a stock RT-P, or KZ1000P, or a K14P, or an ST1300? EVERYONE knows about it happening with a stock Electra Glide. They can't carry loads at speed and, quite frankly, they were never engineered to do that. That's why I believe they're fine for city duty but not highways.

The CHP I was told takes the lowest bid. I heard the Harley came in around 26k where BMW is 27-32k depending on options. Harley promised free basic services and contract to repair Harleys at dealer. Thats where they made their money because the Harleys break a lot. Heard stories of 40-50k in repairs for some Harleys after just a few years. Add to the high service costs that almost every CHP motor hated the Harley, I assumed they would make a change. BMW had been working with CHP for over a year to finally lock in a deal when Harley contract ended.

Anyways, my 2008 Road King never had high speed wobble. My 2015 Electra Glide got the wobble back n the freeway once around 90-100 mph and another time at 60 mph on a sweeper on a city street. I’m a city motor amd love our new BMWs. I’ve had mine for 1 1/2 years now and it’s been amazing. The Harley is a cruiser and made for a Sunday ride, not police work. I’m not nearly as tired after riding the BMW, it doesn’t feel nearly as hot, weighs a ton less, faster, quieter, more agile, and just plain rides better.

Not exactly.

While I wasn't in the room, the story goes at the bid opening, with Harley and BMW seated in the conference room- the state announced it was changing the spec to include maintenance. Frank Stevens (then factory BMW program manager and known good guy) says sure, just give me a few days to do some homework and make sure we make a proper adjustment to our quote- next week is fine.

No-no, nay-nay says the state, we need it right now. Whut-de-farkle? So BMW picks their bid up, leans over to Harley and says "you're the sole bidder, might want to go higher" and walks out. Harley, being no fool, adjusts their bid upwards- some say >$1000 per bike- and wins as sole bidder. Yeah, that worked out great... :party

Wow...that's some bullshit. Why push BMW out like that. I mean, it seems pretty clear that's what they wanted to do with a move like that.

I believe it's always been the Electra's that had the wobble issue and, as I recall, it's the most commonly used police model.

I've said it many times...I'm not a Harley hater at all. But far superior offerings have been around for decades. So really, what is it all about? IMO, it's about tradition but also a bit of backdoor economic protectionism.

Wow...that's some bullshit. Why push BMW out like that. I mean, it seems pretty clear that's what they wanted to do with a move like that.

I think it was caused by the rivalry of CHP wanting to keep running the supplier/bid process and the Purchasing arm of state gov't taking over- requisite dick swinging ensued... Of note, this was all about 15 years ago.
