Motor Officer Assignment

I still haven't returned for the intermediate course...and I took the beginner one like 10 years ago. I'd definitely need a refresher before attempting the eliminator again. I'm rusty as hell.

Still, it'd be worth it. I've attended other department's civilian courses and they've all really been a joke...a waste of time. Alameda County's is simply the best in the area.

How many days was the beginner course? One day? Two days?

You were doing the 18 foot eliminator in the beginner course?

It was just one day. They had us attempt it by the end of the day if we felt comfortable in doing so. I pulled it off once...the other two times I dropped it. :laughing

The Intermediate Course requires you to be able to consistently complete 18-footers without fail or they won't even let you begin the course. You also have to have completed the basic course within the last 12 months so yeah, I'd have to retake the basic course again anyway.

Similar to this one, but more squared off. It took me a lot more than one day of practice to get through that. When I first saw it (prior to going to Alameda) I was pretty intimidated by it. There were some issues with the first trainer Harley we were using, but I was having a hard time doing a 24 foot U turn for a while. There's not much margin for error on the Eliminator with the Harleys. The Kawis have a tighter turn radius, so they will be easier than the Harleys.

There were a couple of us in the class that had been doing some practicing beforehand. I used to spend a lot of time practicing with the RT so I was pretty confident before I attend the course.

Yeah, that will make a difference compared to those who have never done slow speed cone training.

I used to have an R1200RT-P with the crash bars still on it that I used for taking classes and my Total Control instructor training. I dropped it enough times that the dealer had to cut the crash bars off to service it. Still had a much easier time with the 18' turns on the RT-P than I ever did with the Kawis (the curve of the bars really threw me off).

I also need to re-take that Alameda beginners course and then try the intermediate. Maybe Dave can come show us how it's done! :ride

Just for you, we're getting rifle mounts attached to the bikes. And our training also included some range time, which involved riding up in gravel, shooting from the bike, and then dismounting and shooting some more. This was done head on and from the left and right sides. That portion was pretty damn fun! :mm4l:ride:troy

I’m a huge proponent of long guns on motors. For a major priority event, you’ll be the first one there and can deploy a long gun quicker than the first responding beat car.

All this talk is making me miss motogymkhana.

I got to see a Texas motor patrol officer's SBR AR-15 saddlebag mount a while back, pretty neat, punch in a code on the dash and the left saddlebag pops open and up rises the butt of the AR-15 for retrieval. Made me want one for my own police Harley. :D

My previous agency had Sig Sauer piston driven SBRs with the stock that telescoped flush to the receiver. They stored very neatly into the saddle bag on the RT-P and you wouldn’t even know it was there.

They weren’t keypad activated though. It was just a lock/key. I like the keypad idea a lot though!

We did what they called a proficiency course while doing the assessment tests on both the Harleys and our department bikes, which sounds somewhat similar. I thought it was really fun because you pushed yourself for speed, as you were supposed to complete the course in less than 1 1/2 minutes.

It started with a 90° pull out to the left, then three 20-foot lane to lane U turns (left, right left) involving accelerating down the lane, braking, and U turn. Then accelerate to a 12-foot cone weave around 4 cones, a figure 8 around 2 cones, into a 3-cone weave. Through a cone gate, and down to a downhill left U turn within 18-feet. Come up from that and accelerate to the eliminator (similar to the pic on a prior thread), which is basically 3 back to back left right left 18-foot U turns. Come out of that and go into a large O circle to do another figure 8. The time stops at that exit gate.

It was a blast.

Those are better for being discrete and for keeping the rifle clean, but the problem is that they take up an entire saddle bag. Ours will be mounted on the right rear and they are external. Similar to something like this.

Aren't you guys ever concerned that someone will screw with it or just attempt to manhandle it in general when they're mounted like that? I've always wondered about that since, you know, people are basically assholes and kids will be kids and when you couple that with motors not always being able to park in direct line of site of their ride and all, it could end up being a problem, no? Same goes with hanging your helmet on the bars. I always see motors do that and I'm surprised that more of them aren't stolen or just deliberately knocked off.

A cite book and a stack of 180s is all you need. You can probably ditch the handcuffs too....

Congrats man!!!!! I love being a motor and I love my BMW so much more then the Harleys I started on. Matt, Steve and the guys at ACSO put on an excellent motor officer class and i went back last year for motor instructor which was even more fun. Be safe and have fun. Hopefully will see ya at a competition next year if things get back to normal.
