I posted this to SBN but got no replies. what's your take on hard armor vs. padding type?

took my joe rocket overpants in today for hemming. going to have them put in the padding type of armor at the knees. my reasoning is imagining slower speed tumbles wearing those vs. say high speed skids where hard armor may be more beneficial.

they had this sheet showing measurements of joules and shock absorbtion of all kinds of armor and of course the old drop the balls demo. er, you know, drop a hard ball and it bounced. drop the soft pad ball and it didn't, I guess demonstrating it had absorbed all shock.

well, it will be done. Johnson Leathers on Polk St. in the City. they say alot of racers use their pads and the sewing ladies in the back were working on alot of track suits.

I don't have "other things" to do. :( What a sad life. [/sigh]

zx6r, as for the pads, I'd say go for the soft ones... for the same reason you explained (hard = bounce, soft = absorbs impact).

yaw, cool. they better freaking work. another thought is what about sharp objects (or like potholes), then a hard shell would be nice. but for the knees still want flexibility. can't have it all anyhows?

I thought maybe try soft pad for the back of my touring jacket too. would make it nicer to wear off the bike instead of walking around like a ninja turtle. but decided against it. must have a hard shell for my back.

aside:
damn I'm hungry right now.
