license plate holder?

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has ever made their own license plate holder (is that what it's called?) for their bike to get rid of that unweildy plastic fender that comes stock. I have a 2002 R1 and the fender is only held on by 4 bolts, so it seems like it would be really easy to fashion my own out of some kind of sheet metal or something. Then drill holes so that I could use the stock bolts to attach it to the tail? The only thing I'm wondering about is how to attach the turn signals...

Anyone ever do something like this?

Anything is possible when OSH is your friend.:D

Just intigrate (sp) your tail lights to be your turn signals. GP sports has a kit for it. Runs around $50 bucks I think.

You might be able to use some angle iron or just bend some sheet metal. As far as turn signals just integrate them into the tail lights or attach some short stalks to whatever you come up for the license plate.

i dont think u can integrate the led's into turn signals. thats the same problem the r6 guys were having with their led tailights. they might have some special integrator, but the last time i checked they didnt have anything yet. the license plate holder is easy with sheetmetal or even if u maybe shave the extra plastic off the old one. if u have any other questions i could help if i see the project. just pm me if u need any assistance.

I've seen the R6 w/ integrated brake/signals (very sharp - Nick from 5150 has it) and the Gixxers have a 2-light kit too, although it's actually a cluster of red and yellow LEDs.

I'm still fond of the 4 light undertail like Rsrai has on his R1.

I don't think I'll be able to integrate the turn signals into the taillight. From what I've heard, the new '02 R1 led's are in an enclosed box, and even if you get that off, the led's are soldered onto a circuit board. I'm not THAT electrically savvy to know what to do at that point. I'm sure it can be done but I don't know how.

I've looked at fender eliminator kits, but I don't think they make one yet for the '02 R1 yet. Probably in the next month or so. However, I don't know if I wanna spend a hundred or so bucks on something that I could probably make myself, ya know? Thanks for the replies! :-D

i cut off everything in the back, and got an aluminum sheet from OSH. took about 10 minutes and looks pretty cool.

i had the integrated tailights on my bike one. (no LEDS, just regular 1157s). That trailer wiring harness shorted out everything on my bike and bubbled up on one end. So i just got some mini turn signals now.
