braking drills

As usual, more priceless podcasts. I just got to the last 2 (shame on me!). The one on braking being the key to acceleration was spot on. Goes with "if you want to go faster slow down!"

I wanted to toss on a drill I came up with whenever I come to a stop on the street in both cars and bikes. I challenge myself to coming to a complete stop without ever being able to detect the halt in movement. Although we cannot sense speed we are extremely sensitive to changes in direction. It is surprisingly difficult to do this in a car due to the high mass and requires the most delicate control to master. Its fun, challenging and a great way at least for me to become in tune with my brakes especially at the very edge of pad contact. Try it and see how you can do, If I have a passenger I'll ask them to tell me when they feel the car stop. You actually ease OFF the brakes just before stopping with the pads just dusting the rotors.

HA! If you have ever ridden in a car with me when I am training, If the student comes to an "abrupt" stop......I won't let them out of the car until they make a proper, last 1% stop.
