I suppose crashes like this are not common?

Man that sucks. Any info on the guy who got hit by the bike did?
This has been all over the internet and those "sports disasters" TV shows. Anyway, it happened at Loudon (the safest track in the world!) a few years ago. I'm sorry to say that both of the cornerworkers involved sustained very serious injuries. Nobody died, but it was quite a tragic situation. Looking at what the video shows, I'd say the cornerworkers either made a mistake of running out with no one directing traffic away from them or whoever was supposed to do that didn't do their job right. Either way, the red flag should have been flown almost immediately.

Yes, very rare indeed. Judging by the speed of the bikes as they come around that corner, it seems like they aren't getting flagged or waved down for some reason. Hard to tell, but it seems like a communication lapse among the corner workers.

Yeesh - I cringe every time I see that. :(

I hate that video. My take on it is that the workers should have never been on track at that spot. Frankly the riders WERE at waving yellow pace. It is a race after all. The workers were simply in a spot too hidden from racer's eyes.

Still, I've been in that spot, out on track, bikes going to both sides, realizing this retrieval was a bad call and that it's all up to luck now. It's easy to get there, cause it's so hard to stand on the side of the track and say "no, I won't, stop the race."
