Give blood!

I'm still waiting to schedule a blood test to see if I qualify. COIVD has made me a low priority for them.

This message might not have been meant for you. It’s supposed to ask those of us just sitting around on the couch to sit in a chair instead, and let a little bit of our red stuff go. The are lots of us around. If it’s hard, don’t sweat it. I just forgot as riders, we’re all acutely aware of how nice it is to have blood available when we need it.

It is good, if I can move more of my blood material into humans, it advances the goals of my species.

I have an adopted uncle going in to hospice with cancer. Knowing i helped someone fighting cancer is somewhat soothing.

To quote our beloved HoHo, fook cancer.

I was turned away today. Not enough iron. I had them prick two fingers just to make sure, and I was still shy of the iron requirement. Apparently it’s very common with women, and the plasma donation rules are strict. I’ve been eating a lot of red meat (and haven’t been on my cycle — sorry dudes to get graphic), so I’m going to try an iron supplement until I can get another slot. Bummer!

LOL...

I’m pretty bummed I couldn’t do this today. I’ve been turned away for travel and weight twice before, but iron has never been a problem. I’ll give it a go again soon.

That's a bummer!

Are there other ways to get iron without eating red meat (other than simply taking supplements)? I've never had an issue with low iron, but curious if its something I need to keep an eye on. I very rarely eat red meat. More of a chicken and fish eater because red meat really messes with my digestive tract.

I don’t think men usually have iron issues like women. Apparently guys store more iron than us—that’s just the nature of things. But if you did want to get more, eating more high-iron foods is all you have to do. That’s what I was told. There’s a whole list of stuff online, and I like it all—even chicken liver.

My wife and step-daughter both have iron deficiency. Trying to get them to remember their supplements is nearly impossible :laughing

I had to supplement for 8 months to return to normal iron levels. Metabolic issues sometimes prevent iron uptake from the diet.

Interesting on the metabolic thing...

I have a friend who’s always struggling with low iron. It makes her very tired and she’s experienced hair loss from it. The supplements can be hard on her gut I guess. So glad I don’t have any of that!

Donated again today with Red Cross!

My iron level was 18g/dL and their maximum allowed is 20g/dL. I haven’t eaten a cut of red meat in months and ate a hamburger like 2 weeks ago. Weird....

Ugh, getting old sucks. What has helped is a balanced diet with probiotics (food like kraut, not pills), and regular use of digestive enzymes. Stack of pancakes or egg white ommy with veg? Seeds, nuts and greens often pack a strong FE punch. Smaller portions also help with uptake.

And everything above is anathema to Murican eating habits. It's hard for me too. Two days of prep every weekend to assure healthy meals during the workweek. Worth it in the long run.

I just polished off a pound of mussels (that weight incl shells), so that should help. There’s a can of sardines in the pantry, and I might get some oysters later in the week. I’m not a huge fan of red meat, but I like beans, so we’ll see what I can do about this iron situation.
