Give blood!

Weirdest thing, I'm fine after whole blood but a platelet donation (which I thought was supposed to be easier on the body since they put the rest back) wipes me out for the day.

Take Calcium supplements. I get really cold, disoriented and weak after platelet donations until an observant nurse gave me calcium tablets. That put me back on my feet right away.

I was excited to do this over the holidays because I had time to feel like crap and blow a day, but I haven't had that recently. I'll try again soon.

I'm just doing my part to say "Fuck Cancer" with my delicious blood products. I lost my Uncle Dick to cancer on 01/01/2021.

Stupid cancer.

Apparently only ~30% of first time donors ever return to donate a second time. I found that statistic pretty interesting.

Weird... I kind of like the idea of an occasional blood-letting as an internal cleanser. This last time was the first that I've had a low-iron issue, but then again, when I started giving, they didn't ask any questions. It's gotten stricter and stricter.

I gave a triple load of platelets and two bags of plasma in about 90 minutes. They gave me not one but TWO long sleeve t shirts.

I love long sleeve t shirts.

How do you even get to do that? I begged to give and they rejected me because I was just a hair under the iron level requirement. Double donation wouldn’t be allowed even on a good day. Seriously - PM me. Want/need some details.

Update on this!

After reading up a little on some symptoms I was having (specifically dizziness and exhaustion) that appear to be associated with low iron, I had some bloodwork done. I basically have no ferritin. Not exactly sure what that is, but ya need it. Who knew! No one knows why it's low.

Called Kaiser and we're making some diet changes. I'm taking a supplement every other day too. Apparently one needs to up her fiber intake when one she gets on an iron rich diet. So, I eat steaks and prunes now--well, not just that, but I don't eat a lot anyway, so there's not room for much else. :laughing

I have a tea habit, and that doesn't help with the iron situation. Also, it was about 700 calories a day. Between that and the solid food changes, I've lost 4 lbs in a month, unintentionally.

I'm feeling a lot peppier, and hopefully in 3-6 months my iron situation will have resolved itself. However, I have only 5 lbs buffer right now before I won't make the weight cut-off to give blood. I've started working out with weights to see if I can get a little muscle going to add healthy weight.

You’re only eating 700 calories per day?!?!?

My next appointment is 3/13 to give another unit.

God, no. I'd be dead! I did a tally of a few days of average eating to see why I might be losing weight and I think I was a lot closer to 2000. Sometimes a little over, sometimes a little under. Seems like a lot for someone my size. Anyway, the tea thing was 30% of that--700 calories. And the tea is black tea, tablespoons of sugar, and a half a cup of heavy cream. It was kinda over-the-top unhealthy. I suppose I could have topped it with bacon to make it worse.

Since moving to the US, I have been ineligible to give blood for fear of mad cow disease. It's a shame as I used to give blood regularly :x.

You are not eligible to donate if:

From January 1, 1980, through December 31, 1996, you spent (visited or lived) a cumulative time of 3 months or more, in any country in the United Kingdom (UK)
