Gearing up

10 mins normally but If its hot out Ill put on my boots first and start up the bike and and put gloves, jacket and helmet on while sitting on top of it so then i can ride away quickly and get some wind. I dislike being sweaty although I sweat easily so the longer I can prolong it the better

The way I look at it is the day I don’t suit up - airbag jacket, gloves, moto pants, armored boots - is the day I’ll crash and wish I’d taken a few extra minutes to put all that stuff on.

Realistically, 20-25 minutes. In making this list I realize that tech peripherals require a lot of overhead that slows the process down.

My rides are full day affairs once a week. So Saturday morning goes like this:

  1. fuss with GoPro
  2. fuss with Sena
  3. fuss with USB battery pack
  4. go to kitchen and retrieve snacks and drink
  5. go back to front door put on airvest
  6. put on heated jacket
  7. haul gear to garage
  8. pull bike out
  9. go back inside house to remember what I forgot (inevitably a USB cord, wallet, clean earplugs
  10. back to garage and haul out Aerostich and boots
  11. suit up on driveway
  12. put wallet into right breast pocket and forget to zipper it closed
  13. photograph odometer
  14. turn on RideWithGPS app
  15. mount phone on bike
  16. choke on, start engine
  17. quick inspection of bike for any funkiness
  18. check saddlebags zippered and secure
  19. check group chat for meeting location
  20. load destination on Google maps
  21. Sena
  22. music
  23. swap daily glasses for riding glasses
  24. earplugs
  25. helmet
  26. gloves
  27. choke off
  28. ride away

@RVFRick...
Of course if that were my gear up routine, I'd need at least 2 bathroom breaks... requiring un gearing most of that stuff, then pulling it back together.

0 to ATGATT in 1 min 30 seconds. Armored 1-piece, ear plugs, full face, gloves. I do so much commuting (back when I was commuting), it better be fast.

I do AGST (All Gear Sometimes). Yes, at times I just rock regular jeans, a flannel, boots, gloves and a leather riding vest which takes me seconds. Moving to a rural area where roads are faster and longer to get to places, I’ve been gearing up. 2-3 minutes maybe for full gear? I still wear my Hein Gerreck cruiser jacket from 1999. Yesterday I sewed in straps with snaps to connect to my armored jeans.

I was thinking about this over the weekend. I think for me it's time well spent and kind of a pre ride ritual. I slowly get my focus as I'm putting on my pants, buckling the boots checking to make sure I have what I need in my jacket pockets, wiping the helmet visor. Then it's a two block walk to my garage to roll the bike out, check tire pressures (generally bike prep and inspection happened the night before) and roll out. I may start the morning tired with a foggy mind, but by the time I'm rolling away from my garage I'm ready.

Whatever that means
Normally im just in my commute attire, so like 5 minutes.

back when i could fit into my leathers and would ride on track and weekend aggressive rides, it was considerably longer.

I like to be comfy on my ride - so i start with microfleece layers, then wool socks, then jeans and shirt and boots. Then my leather overpants. At this point I clean my visor and the windscreen and mirrors. Then get the bike out and make sure it's ready. Then i get my phone and battery and keys into the tank bag or tail trunk. Head sock, jacket, helmet, dial up tunes - then gloves and ready to go.

20 minutes usually
