I'm considering an upgrade to the stock seat on my 2011 FJR1300.
A Laam or RDL or ???

Anyone have first hand experiences or recommendations?

I was hoping to find someone local. I'd really like to sit on one.
I've read you become more 'height impaired' at stops on custom seats.

fjr seat

I don't know anything about the seats you are mentioning, but I have had Corbin on my 2016 FJR and very happy. I would put Corbin in the mix

With a Laam seat (I've had one about a year), they are custom made to the individual rider. It fits me perfectly, cannot imagine a better seat but it won't feel the same if you sat on it unless you are proportioned just like me (225lbs, 32" inseam). I did a ride-in and it was worth every cent (plus the great ride to Redding).

Bergmen,

I'm considering a Laam seat. My concern is the amount of seat height increase.
My Levis say 30L and I can put 1 foot flat and the other on the the ball, at a stop (on my FJR).
I really do not want to make the seat much taller. I'm 5'9" and 150.
I know it is about having your legs spread more on a tractor style saddle.

I thought if I could sit on one it would give me some idea.

Your thoughts?

I'm fortunate to have one of each. I did a drive in w/ Seth to have the Laam seat made. I had him raise it to give me some leg room. I love the seat for most kinds of riding. But if I'm taking off on a multi-week ride I toss on the RDL. You simply can't beat the comfort for one long day after another in the saddle (IMO) especially when you throw in hot weather. The RDL is a bit inconvenient around town for me as the 'wings' intrude a bit when at stops and such. I have a Laam and RDL for the XR also. I'm similarly size to Dan (Bergman).

Since you have both the RDL and Laam...
Do you you think the Laam would be more suitable for us with short legs?

RDL makes a Sport model seat that has the same height as stock. It's $50 less than the standard seat, so that makes it only about $50 more than a Laam and much better. Russell's customer is top notch, unlike Laam who may treat you as a VIP or beggar depending on his mood.

In general yes. RDL's are known for adding height to the seat. I went from flat footing the XR to now being on the balls of my feet. I hope that will come down a bit with break in but you can't count on it. On the FJR it wasn't that bad. But it's all in how you instruct Russell or Laam to build a seat fro you. They're custom seats.

Seth will custom build this seat to your exact requirements. I did not notice any height change myself just a 500% increase in ride comfort. Never had a seat like this.

Dan,

Thanks for the details. I called Laam a few days ago and had a nice conversation with the woman who answered (her name escapes me atm).
She said the same thing. The sport seat is completely customizable and retaining the stock seat height is no problem.

Your 500% improvement is a sturdy recommendation.

I just need to re-fill the piggy bank after purchasing a set of Michelin Road Pilot 4 GTs.

One of the really good things about the Laam seat is the affordability. My riders seat + recovering of the passenger seat in the same cover material (no customization of the passenger seat otherwise) was only $340.00.

That is a heck of a deal in my book (my stock, off-the-shelf Sargeant was $395.00 and was no where near the quality of the Lamm seat.)

Thanks, but I rode up and bought a Laam seat.
Couldn't be happier with the seat, price or service!
