I've seen a few audiophile threads pop up here and there in the sink but nothing here in non-moto. Figured I'd start something up so we have a resource for people looking to upgrade their gear and whatnot.
For starters, I wouldn't quite call myself an audiophile...yet. I'm on my way. I definitely have a low tolerance for craptastic cheap stuff and can tell the difference clearly between super cheap and medium/high quality, but my ears aren't quite yet able to fully appreciate audiophile level gear (neither can my wallet).
Gear I have currently:
Home theater:
Bose Lifestyle V20 5.1 surround
I bought these in IIRC 2006 ish, or maybe it was 2008. Somewhere around there. I replaced a full Cambridge Soundworks setup with it, because I liked how much more compact and easy to move they were - and I couldn't tell the difference in sound quality aside from at very high volumes, far louder than I typically listened to in apartment living conditions. They've worked fantastically over the years and still serve me well.
PC speakers:
Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX speakers
I picked these up very recently, up until buying these I'd mainly just used headphones. Many years back, I did have a set of the Creative Gigaworks 5.1 surround sound THX speakers which also sounded fantastic, but after going through several gaming builds and eventually getting out of PC gaming I decided I didn't need the speakers either. These days, I mainly just use them for listening to music while working - and I can't recommend them enough. For $150 it's quite possibly the best bang for buck that you can get. Considering all I listen to is Pandora anyway.
Headphones:
Bose SIE2
They work well and are excellent quality compared to other stuff I've checked out in the <$200 range. There may be others that are a bit better here and there, but these are solid. Good bass, good treble, balanced scale - not overpowering on the lows or highs or mids just nice and even.
JayBird BlueBuds
Best bluetooth headphones for the price point that I could find. Long battery life, reasonably comfortable, and the best part - block out a LOT of ambient noise, meaning you don't have to blast them to hear anything. They stick out from your ears a bit, but I've worn them under my helmet on short to medium rides without much discomfort. The noise blocking works wonders for wind noise compared to other headphones I've tried while riding (haven't gone with a full custom molded setup yet though).
Will edit this more Thursday, I should really get to bed. Just wanted to start this thread for everyone. I know there's plenty out there with waaaaaay more knowledge than I have (and also way more $$$$$ invested).
