Hello Janna,

No one can write like Hemingway and Carver!

i'm sure you're a complete bore at parties like you're a complete bore on barf;
except for the lying part which i find awesome and is the only reason you're not on my ignore list (boring chatty people go on my ignore list; liars never do).

Having taken a backseat on most of this, I've got to say that I'm a bit floored as to how personally some people have taken this.

Seriously, folks.

1) It's the internet. You should have known better, and shame on you for anger resulting from your failure to recognize.

2) What's with the personal axe to grind here? The entertainment was fantastic. I think the entire "outing" at the end actually added to the entire experience. But what do any of you have to gain from being angry from all of this? Why choose to be upset over it? You can either sit around and continue to be angry, or just continue on with life. But standing around and saying "liar, liar" at each and every single one of his posts gets you *nothing* at all. Feanor generally seems like a pretty alright guy here on BARF. Those few people who have actually met him generally seem to like him, just like most every other motorcyclist out there. I don't understand why a couple of you guys can't seem to just let this go? You can either stay angry or just accept what happened and move on.

He seems generally sorry for what happened. Since no human being can ever read another's mind, only Feanor will know whether that is truly honest or not. But you can either stay angry at him forever, or give him the benefit of the doubt. If you choose the former, you've got other issues that have nothing to do with him. Anger isn't going to do you any good, and the lot of you who keep flaming him are starting to look like a bunch of rather immature idiots.

For those who jumped on late in the game and are chipping in with the flames, you've got no idea who this gentleman is, nor the experience that unfolded since he began posting. You've got no right to step in and make a judgment call in such a situation.

And apparently you can't edit things here (of course) and somehow I ended up quoting myself. That is most definitely not a conversation between me and me.

Hello Janna,

No one can write like Hemingway and Carver! Even when they practice the same style! I don't practice writing like anyone actually and just write as it comes, and to me, I think my own writing sucks... badly, and never said anything to contradict that. It's why I was floored when a few people said they liked it, or that it was even decent. I think people weren't referring to the words or the style (or lack of it), but to the situations and the characters and their reactions to situations that people don't ever have normally.

Or on a deeper level, maybe the people who found themselves engaged in "some" way saw situations that shared similarities to their own lives and it was cathartic to see other people, even fictitious ones, get themselves out of those difficult times.

Yes, people can write like those two without writing as well as they did.

The point is to practice editing your flow of words as you write and revise, trimming out everything that isn't absolutely necessary and potent. My comment was a response to your statement about the different styles in which you can write. I was suggesting you try one that people might like a bit more. A lot of people have been chiming on on your writing style (mean, but it's BARF), and dude... you're verbose. From what I've read in here, your style bugs people as much as the truthfulness of the content. You're like the anti-Hemingway, when it comes to style. This is coming from someone who had the same disease. So if you want to be a good writer, and I think you do, I'll say it again: Try writing like Hemingway and Carver. The style WILL rub off. I promise. Then later, your own writing will benefit from being sharper and more focused.

Everything you said makes sense, and is logical. The trouble is I never wrote anything in Cold Shower or out of it for other's entertainment or impression. The fact that some others were engaged in some way with the story was a happy and completely unexpected byproduct.

In a forum filled with unique individuals it doesn't sound reasonable in many ways when there is such anger about me not writing like someone else, or acting in a way they expect. In truth, if Cold Shower read even remotely like "a story" that was a coincidence. It was a work of personal ranting that just happened to be longer and have more punctuation than normal.

There's that saying that the rain falls on the just and unjust alike. I've thought about this. What comes to my mind is that those who like Cold Shower do so because they recognize what parts of their lives it reminds them of, and those that hate it and the way I did it also recognize parts of their own lives, but those thoughts trigger anger.

Cold Shower is a badly written NEUTRAL piece, and like a gun, it carries every connotation that people can imagine, good and bad.

No one here is petty, we all say things and do things for a specific reason. Because I can't understand what some of those reasons are I feel doesn't give me the right to condemn anyone. That's why I won't react in any way that doesn't lead to connection and at least an amiable exchange; that tack has a destination. Insult and personal attacks is an endless spiral of hurt and wasted effort.

Thread shoulda been locked after the story concluded. It was great for however long it lasted. I sat on my ass the past 12 hours reading all the posts; thanks Feanor or David.

You make a good point.

I have to say that you have conducted yourself in this recent series of exchanges with tremendous graciousness and calm, and have avoided every opportunity thrown at you to escalate things. I couldn't have done it.

Hanging at Freds with a OG barfer.

This thread came up.

Took us a while to connect the dots and get here.
Love the historical aspect of Barf. If you can say 10 years is historical. :laughing
