Checkered flag prior to being lapped - DNF?

The provisional results for the 300WSS race this weekend showed me as 6th of 10, but in the official results I show a DNF. I suspect this is because I didn't finish my last lap. On lap 6 I was expecting the white flag, but I got the checkered instead - and yes, I did a double-take heading into T1 to make sure it was actually the checkered! - and so I cruised around the rest of the lap and entered the pits. I'm nearly certain I did not get lapped, but the rider who was immediately behind me is the first one showing as "+1 lap" - so I guess the race leaders were very close to my tail, and the tower showed the checker for them prior to me passing start/finish - but according to timing, I should have actually finished that lap.

How should one handle this? It doesn't seem right to ignore the checkered flag, even if it was thrown early, just because I *think* I didn't get lapped. I sure don't want to be the asshole doing an extra lap and holding up the next race! At the same time, getting DNF'd because I was actually following the flags instead of my own lap count kind of sucks.

Not looking for any change to this weekend's results, but I'd appreciate any input on how to handle this situation if it occurs again. Thanks!

Follow the flags

It sounds like you did the right thing by following the flags. They (race control) should be able to see based on the total time on the race where the leaders were in relation to your last lap. If they're finishing the last lap while you're finishing your next-to-last lap you should have pretty good justification to claim you saw the checkered flag.

Your question should be 'why did I get a DNF when I saw the checker, did a cool down lap, and entered the pits?' See if your hypothesis that the leaders were right behind you is correct. I'm sure they can adjust the results to show you finished the race and collected points.

Go to the afm website and contact the race director. It is not uncommon for someone to get the checkered flag early if the race leader is very close to lapping people at start finish. I saw it happen more than once last weekend.

You made the right call by following the flag that you received.
