California Superbike School

My experience with the CSS in the last two days. Let me explain. I got a call from a friend of mine on 14 Oct 2020 just after 8 am. She asked me if I wanted to ride at Laguna Seca. Of course I said yes. When? I say. She says right now. They are short people to man the turn worker stations and if I come out, I'll get to ride. OK, I say. I spend a lot of time riding race tracks in norther California and an opportunity to go play at Laguna Seca is not easily passed up. So I drop everything I had planned for the day and the next and get my bike in the truck, pack all my gear and get my toy hauler and head out to the track as fast as I can. These guys need my help and I'm happy to give it. I was told that when I get there I should go straight to turn 5 where a guy will be with all the paperwork for me to sign etc. I was there by 11 am. Pretty good I thought as the drive takes an hour and a half. So as a turn worker your responsibilities besides waving flags is providing feedback to "Control" on how the students are doing. For example. If a student misses the apex or misses a turn in point or anything, you call in the bike number and the infraction so that they can point it out to their coaches and help the student. Not a bad way to go in my opinion. Immediate feedback. This does rely on the turn workers ability to provide reliable feedback though. They also have a few extra people that change corners every riding session so that the corner worker can go out for a ride. The rules as explained to me were to get on the track and ride a session. When the checkered flag comes out you go in the Hot Pits and to the grid where a Trevor sends you back out to your corner when the track is clear. I got a chance to ride one session before lunch. At the end I pull into the Hot Pits and Trevor stops me and starts telling me that I'm doing it wrong. That I am supposed to get on the track from the corner where I'm working and pull in the pits on the very first lap where he will send me out for the riding session. I start telling him that "Oh, OK, happy to do that. He says, and this is a direct quote. "You interrupt me again and I will kick you out of here and you will never ride with us again." I'm a bit taken aback by this as I didn't call him to come help, they called me. I dropped everything to get there as fast as I could and this is the thanks I get? Thee guy Bill who was in turn 5 when I arrived was right behind me and tells Trevor that he didn't tell me about that part. Trevor doesn't apologize or anything just sends me back to turn 5. I'm feeling a little unappreciated here. I'm giving up 2 days to help and this is how they show their appreciation. I mean this guy ripped into me.
They also don't provide anything to the turn workers. No food at lunch, not even water. Your only thanks is that you get to ride the track. I didnt even get a Thank you at the end of the day.

The next day was going reasonably well but towards the end I get flagged down by one of their on track coaches who motions for me to pull in the pits. I pull in the pits and now Trevor tells me that I made a bad pass on one of their students and took his line away going into turn 2. I know exactly what he is talking about because when I made the pass, I made sure to do it early and leave the student plenty of room to make an adjustment. I was more than I don't know, 6, 8 maybe even ten feet to the inside of the guy. This is an absolutely normal overpass at any corner. I did nothing wrong. On top of that I have been sitting in that turn 5 tower watching their coaches do that exact same move to the students all day long. So what gives.

Also, when I was on the track I noticed that their coaches block us from trying to pass the students. I f a student goes to the inside of the turn the coach blocks you from passing buy going to the outside. If the student goes wide on the entrance, the coaches block you from going under them. Pretty chicken shit in my opinion. I don't think I'll be in a hurry to go help these people again.

A few comments.

Your first time with them doing this right?

So you are not a known entity and that will affect how they may choose to protect their students. I get that for sure. The Instructors have ridden thousands of miles with students and are known entities.
What they can do passing should be considered a bit differently.

Last thing they want is a guest flagger / free track rider to make an issue for a student.

I did this 50 times plus over my racing career and always enjoyed all aspects of helping and the riding. Giving the students room was always part of it. As a poor ass racer with very few opportunities to ride the track it was awesome to get extra track time. Getting to know the guys was cool too. Some of the instructors were fast as hell and at times we had some good times spending a few laps dicing it up.

Now looking back.. where is my lunch..? :laughing
Getting the free track time far makes up for bringing a sammich and some drinks. However I knew that. Whomever hooked you up should have shared that with you. Bummer there.

Now the dude being rude.. no comment there. I would hope that it would not take place, but it did.

I don't think belongs in riding skills. It is more of a review and complain deal so moving to reviews and recommendations.

Hey budman. Been a while since I've seen ya. Hope things are well. For clarification the main problem was that attitude. My day was interrupted and stayed that way for 2 days. Which, I was quite happy to give for a chance to ride Laguna. But having a guy get in my face like that, and tell me to quit interrupting him? Hell of a way to say thank you for coming and saving our butts.

I'm sorry that all you see is the riding portion because I thought I was clear on the courteous circumstances of my riding. I agree with everything you say with the exception that you really don't meet anybody. You just sit in your corner and leave at the end of the day. Again, I'm happy to do that because I get to ride at Laguna.

As to which forum you think it belongs to is fine with me. I put it there because it had Schools listed in the heading.

Mojo, it's misleading to see this post from you about our school when you were volunteering to corner work in exchange for track time, which you got.

At the end of the day it seems like your feelings were hurt because you didn't like the way you were talked to and decided to write a negative review on your experience as a volunteer.

The story on our side is different than you present it and if your intention was to annoy, you have accomplished that.

Hmm, well let's see. Where to begin. I'll keep an open mind here. You say the story on your side is different. Alright let's hear it. Perhaps there is something I'm unaware of.

My story, I thought was quite clear. You contacted me. Asked me to come out. I did. I was happy to drop everything to ride at Laguna. Who wouldn't be. The first thing happened is I got ripped into for something I wasn't told about. The guy who didn't tell me was right there when this happened and he stepped up to point that out.

So, were my feelings hurt. Yup they were. That's why people write reviews.

I had a lot more respect for the California Superbike School before this.

Again if you know something I don't, talk to me.

Mojo, I really don't see a point to this thread other than pitching a fit in public. A better tact would have been contacting CSS and getting contact with leadership and having a conversation. In a passive aggressive way, you're just looking to take a dump on them, and I don't think many are buying it.

Its your call, but I'd delete the thread and hope folks just forget about it. I'm no expert or have inside knowledge, but I'm doubting there's a free track day (or lunch) in the works for you...

You weren’t helping the school, you were helping the corner workers. Less corner workers means less track time for corner workers. So there’s that. You violated their protocol by not checking in at the grid with Trevor (which wasn’t your fault). He blew your hair back, BFD who gives a shit? You made a bad pass according to an instructor, and their observations are obviously and for good reason more weighted than yours, learn and move on. The students are priority number one, and that’s the way it should be.

Edit: And you want a free lunch? Come on man. You’re getting a free trackday at Laguna.

Wow! A lot of animosity here. Interesting to see everyone jump on all the peripheral details without addressing what started the whole thing. Any chance that you guys are wrong? At least partly wrong. Any chance that maybe, just maybe Trevor is a bit overloaded. Perhaps, just perhaps you guys should consider that and find a way to get him some help so he doesn't freak out. I'm talking about work load. Somebody mentioned that I should bring this up to the Management. Well I did, they simply told me that, well you know, he does a lot around here, he basically runs the whole thing. He works really hard, he's a good guy. One of the other corner workers that I talked to said pretty much the same thing. In each case it came across that they are making excuses for his behavior and it implied that it has happened before.. Hmm. So it's OK for him to be a D***. So am I being a D*** for pointing that out. Maybe not. It only takes one match to start a fire you know. Or whatever analogy you like.

I'm pretty sure I made it clear that I was quite happy to help out to get to ride Laguna. Hell, excited to do so. You don't think I wasn't helping the school. Really? I was asked to make observations of the students performance and report in to Control to help the school. That's not helping?

So you want me to drop it and move on. I think I made my point. And sorry that you can't see that.

Cool story. Well at least you got to be a corner worker one time for CSS! Hopefully they don’t go out of business because Trevor hurt your feelings.

Mojo - I think what people are reacting to isn't the accuracy of your story, but how you handled it. And generally, you started out fine by reaching out to management. Where things seem to have come off the rails is when you decided to post up a negative review of an entire company for what essentially boils down to a beef between you and another guy.

You may be totally in the right here, but is it worth dragging the name of CSS as an organization through the mud? Your safety wasn't jeopardized. You got free track time. Seems like a good deal on the surface of it. The moto business isn't one jumps into to make a lot of money. Times are rrrrrreally tough right now and they're only going to get more challenging as this pandemic sucks the wind out of everyone's economic sails. Your move comes off perhaps being more self-serving and short-sighted than I'm sure you intended.

Well...I had the flip side to this Mojo.
Hyper was at a CSS school years ago at Sears.
The corner workers were riding like jack-asses and I was pissed and let them know.
Not only had she spent good money for the school to learn to be a better rider, but now felt she (and I) felt she was being put at risk by some of the corner workers.
She hadn't planned on being buzzed by some locals riding like it was there personal track day and the students were just in their way...cutting up the students who were practicing their lessons, late passes, inside and out, wheelies when thy could...
Not saying this was you (as you stated) , but just another perspective.

Have to agree with Ducati Honey’s perspective.

We were not there of course.

You should have just complained to Danny. :laughing

Speaking as an instructor with a different school, you were given free track time for working the corner. With that comes both a moral and actual agreement to follow specific rules. I suspect strongly that you failed to do so.

And I could be totally wrong here as well. No doubt of that. I've been wrong most of my life.

One of the things I have done as an instructor is to come down hard on people riding "for free" if they were not courteous to the "paying" customers.

Mojo is not a snowflake whiner. He is a very experienced racer and Trackday rider who is chill. If this wasn’t over the line no one would have heard about it. I talked to him and he mentioned he was a Laguna and never mentioned this. He is not a ranting person all wrapped up about an incident that was due to his lack of understanding of what happened. I’ve seen his riding style for years and he always passes for the comfort of the other riders.

The point I see is a less than professional conduct with finesse that would be expected of a leader of world renowned Organisation. It was enough to report to the community. If you disagree without being there, that is fine. Welcome to the internet and be glad we are not on twitter or FB.

Time to move on.
