California Lane Splitting - how, when, why, stories etc. etc. etc

Always a controversial , subjective topic. Wanted to open up a convo on hearing what folks think about lane splitting any and all welcome . Just looking for a one stop shop for posting information on lane splitting good or bad.

Someone shared this over on the facebook forum and I thought it was the most comprehensive single reference I have seen from an official authority figure on the topic...

The guidelines you linked were published in 2012, I believe. Since then, a complaint to an administrative law court forced the CHP to withdraw them (search this site for the name of the whiner, a Mr. Mandler).

Then, in 2016 a law was passed that explicitly allowed CHP to issue educational guidelines for splitting, thereby overcoming the complaint (search this site for "AB 51" or the name of the Assembly member who sponsored the bill, Bill Quirk).

CHP was on their way to issuing guidelines earlier this year when the commissioner retired, and they were sucked into a bureaucratic vacuum.

However, BARF, under esteemed leader Budman, stepped up and developed our own guidelines (PDF). The best place to discuss them is in the November thread that announced them, Bay Area Riders Forum official Lane Splitting Guidelines.

Oh cool , I didn't see that thread , I will check them out. And yes on the DMV website their is a post of exactly what you speak about where due to the idea that lanesplitting "Wasn't explicitly legal or illegal" someone complained per the dmv post that says we removed due to this reason - but it still has some relevent things to consider about lane splitting in general eg. the speed etc which is often the most debated about topic eg. guys splitting doing 70 mph vs someone saying that is dangerous and they only do 30 mph max. I like to hear the opinions on those topics etc.
