You guys will think of anything to discount someone's contribution. Outside the city, most people have a garage or carport/ area to work on their vehicles. Don't want to work on it or can't? Gotta pay someone.

His original point was that because he can do it, everyone should work on their own car. I was just pointing out that not everyone has the means or ability.

Mikey's not wrong though: that having someone else to work on your stuff can become cost prohibitive. Shame we got rid of auto shop/ etc in high school programs. Of course the cars people are going to learn to work on will be relics soon.

I remember being outside on the dirt replacing control arms and trying to compress springs with 2x4” and whatever else I could find because I didn’t have proper tools when shit shit broke out of the blue like happens with old clunkers.
I did it myself because I was broke and I sure as shit don’t miss that stuff. I’ll be paying someone else to do it from here on in.

The newer stuff is actually easier to work on. Th diagnosing is usually done for you, and scan tools are getting cheaper.

Depends.. I've been watching some videos about fixing Audi's and it's VERY complicated. Like, drop the motor to change a couple filter screens kind of complicated.

So a few months back one of my rear liftgate struts was leaking so I replaced them.

So now the rear liftgate will only go up 75% of the way because it needs to be reset using a dealer computer. Total BS.

Mechanical stuff, yeah it’s much less rebuilding and more just replacing entire components now.

But going with the whole point of this thread...the tech stuff is really just locking out people working in their garages. Suppose your mirror got blasted in a parking lot or punched off by an aggro lane splitter. Sure you can physically R&R the mirror assembly. But if that mirror housing contains a camera (as part of a 360 surround parking camera or lane change assist camera), now it has to be aimed. And camera aiming requires thousands of dollars worth of special tools.

I am learning about "new stuff". Thanks for the contribution. :thumbup

Yes, I agree--I don't understand why people--like in the OP--with a Merc E400 can't pay $7000 for two headlights, why are they owning it then. :dunno
(additionally Merc E400 owner-repairmen .. kinda escapes my mind right now!)

it's possible they were referring to two different types of "new stuff", 98 to 2010 probably easier but 2010+ .. worse???

I'm wondering why she has to pay for the headlights when her lease isn't even up yet. Isn't stuff like that usually covered?
