There is a big effort to get riders to contact their Senators.

The bill is on the appropriations consent calendar and once past that will go to the full Senate. We are at an historical impass. The first chance to implicitly have lane sharing be legal in the USA.

It will allow other Moto activists to push for it in there State. IF you are from another State and want my help with that just ask.

NBC is putting together a story on it now and barfers will be featured in that. The Bay Area Riders Forum has been front and central in this issue for five years. That rocks.

Stay involved. Support the sport and Rock barf!!

Well we are just a signature away from having it our way!! :banana

AB 51 has passed and only the Governor needs to put his approval on it.

Pretty fricking stoked. What started back in 2011 in the CA Motorcycle Safety Committee has now lead to a great application of the law.

Really just what the group that was working Mr. Quirk wanted.

Lots of different sources out there now.

Just caught a subtle difference that AB51 will provide- only motorcycles can do it. The existing "non" law allowed automotive traffic to split if they fit next to a motorcycle, that will no longer be the case (if I'm reading correctly).

Pretty cool.

I'm getting everyone I can to do one. I've got 'em from Lee Parks, Dubbelju, and a few others as well now.

Hmmmm. My question - does this mean we won't be able to ride on the left side of lane 1 while lane sharing (because not 'between rows')?

FYI, the current text of the bill is:

SECTION 1. Section 21658.1 is added to the Vehicle Code, to read:

21658.1. (a) For the purposes of this section, “lane splitting” means driving a motorcycle, as defined in Section 400, that has two wheels in contact with the ground, between rows of stopped or moving vehicles in the same lane, including on both divided and undivided streets, roads, or highways.
(b) The Department of the California Highway Patrol may develop educational guidelines relating to lane splitting in a manner that would ensure the safety of the motorcyclist and the drivers and passengers of the surrounding vehicles.
(c) In developing guidelines pursuant to this section, the department shall consult with agencies and organizations with an interest in road safety and motorcyclist behavior, including, but not limited to, all of the following:
(1) The Department of Motor Vehicles.
(2) The Department of Transportation.
(3) The Office of Traffic Safety.
(4) A motorcycle organization focused on motorcyclist safety.

My understanding was that was never in the cards. Left of the leftmost lane nor right of the rightmost lane are part of this. Reserved for emergency use, besides there's a ton of crap on the road there.

Not as fast as I look.
Governor Brown Signs AB51 ...:party
Oh, BABY! If I was up-to-it, I would spend all day looking for traffic to split throughout Northern California. :party I hope the media gets the word out, too.

Some :banana for Surj.
