Anyone know a good locksmith?

So, a week ago, my bike key fell out of my pocket somewhere. I spent a couple days retracing steps only to conceed the key is gone.

I have a 93 Kawasaki ZX6-E and the Kawi dealer was telling me that my bike didn't have a key code they could use to cut a new key. They can make the key from the ignition, but I dont have the tools to get it out (nor am I greatly inclined in the use of them). I can't easily take the bike to them because the handlebars are locked.

After calling about 20 different locksmiths, the only 2 I've found want about $150. Is this the price I'm going to have to pay or does anyone know of a cheaper locksmith that could do this?

Any help here would be appreciated, a week without the bike is proving to be painful. (Atleast its raining on the weekend so it helps sooth the urge to ride)

And yes, I know I'm a dumb ass for losing my key. :rolleyes

Sorry to hear about it bro..

I just 'retired' from being a locksmith of 7 years...

I'm a bit far from your location, otherwise I could probably help
or get someone to help.

$150 is a pretty typical price, because they are charging for
a trip charge to your location on top of doing the job...
The only way to make it a little cheaper would be if you
could bring the bike to their shop, or maybe the trunk lock, or gas cap lock..

When you get the locksmith to do the job for you, be sure that
they not only make a new key, but that they 'decode' the cuts
so that you have a key number which the dealer can cut an
original key from...

Good luck!!!

Where did you find it? Is it on the bike somewhere?

It's a shiny metal tag on the original keychain. I don't think it's written or documented anywhere else.

When my bike was stolen and the Ingnition was destroyed, The insurance replaced my ignition and seat lock. I thought the full ignition would be expensive, but the dealer only charged about $170. which also included the seat lock and 2 keys.. and we all know dealer markup.. give them a call.. see what they can do. Meet me in Santa cruz, i will throw it in for you

Hey thanks for the tip. I ended up calling a couple dealers, one said they could only put in a new ignition. Parts were going to be 250 or so. The other dealer is able to make keys, so I ended up taking it there. But the the handlebars locked they are still having a heck of a time getting the old ignition out. I'm hoping to get the bike back on monday.
