Amending Credit Report

Anyone have any experience getting a CC company to remove a negative report? I did the ol set it and forget it autopay feature for a Capital One card (18 months interest free, so why not?) and unfortunately only nailed the forget it part. Soon as I got the notification that the payment was past due I paid it, made an extra payment, and corrected the autopay. Now it's working, but the negative hit on my credit report dropped my score 51 points. Which seems really excessive, given my otherwise spotless history.

So I've been reading and it seems like I can send a letter requesting a "goodwill adjustment." Seems like something a phone call or email could more easily accomplish, but what do I know. Have any of you ever done this with any success?

Thankfully I'm not in the market for a house or anything, but I might want to get the wife a new(er) car at some point and I don't want to be punished with a higher interest rate because of one oversight. Any help or tips appreciated

What the shit is this...
I've got a similar situation, one late Capital One payment (31 days, I missed the second notice by hours :mad) from about 4 years ago in the middle of a ten year spotless record, and they won't do anything about it. You can ask, but they aren't obligated to help.

They make money (especially CapitalOne!!!!) by charging you higher interest because your credit rating is bad, they have absolutely zero incentive to help you out, especially since that ties you to them for years longer.

It's a 0% card that will be paid off before interest kicks in. So I guess they could be happy with the $39 (exorbitant) fee they charged me and never make another cent from me again.

I was so close to 800 and now I'm bummed. I made a bunch of moves to start getting my shit in order. We are currently living within our means and paying off old debts via a 403B loan (some don't like it, but I like paying the interest to myself) while maxing out my 403B and HSA every year. Within 4 years I'll have zero debts and I don't want a shitty credit score to get in my way when I start making real moves. Eventually I want a big piece of property somewhere and if this one oversight ends up costing me in the form of shitty interest rates I'll.. just be another impotently enraged consumer, I guess.

So no one's gotten their credit score fixed? Should I hire one of those fixers to do it for me? Is that worth it?

I think that one of the credit agencies has offered a deal where you can spike your credit rating, short term, for a fee.....

When I read that awhile back, I wondered how that was even legal.

Honestly I wouldn’t worry OP. I tanked my score six months ago by over 100 points and now I’m almost back to where I was, just over 800.

Time is your friend as long as you continue to be on top of it.

Do you have the credit karma app?

51 points seems excessive? For a couple days late?

I missed one in November for my Amazon store card, just slipped my mind, and my score hasn't dropped at all.

Try calling and tell them you want to cancel the card since they are unwilling to work with a long term good customer. May or may not work but I have found you often get routed into some sort of customer retention system when you say you are leaving and things become more flexible. (not specific to credit cards, works for cell phones, internet whatever).
