Advice on mini moto racing

I was going to sell my son's dirtbike since a) he's outgrown it and b) never rode it anyway. It literally has about 3 hours on the engine.

I've decided that rather than sell I might convert it to mini moto. There seem to be some races at Sonoma and Stockton. It's a CRF110 and I'm not sure if there's still a class for the 70/110 bikes. It looks like it's stratified into 50s, groms, and 150/230s.

Does anyone have input on bike classes? Is there a 'series' or are these events just run by the individual tracks? Any thoughts on prepping a bike? I'd like to get some info before I start spending money and wrenching. So far it looks like a lot of fun at a fraction of the budget.

There are so many forums and social media these days, the BARF Mini (or Motard) do not get a lot of attention these days. Most Mini track and racing discussions are found on specific forums and or FB.

Example; Stockton Lil' 99 track provider (Allen) mostly posts activity on FB, ie. NorCal Mini Racers group. I just relay upcoming events on BARF, for those whom don't care for FB or don't have an active account. He is also affiliated with the Atwater and Dixon tracks. For the Infineon track, you'll have to access their site (see link Budman provided) and check their calendar for Moto track day events.

Post any questions you may have, or contact Allen directly (see link Budman provided).

As far as bike prep for the crf110, not much - road tires and handgaurds, then ride the wheels off of it :p :ride

I'm not aware of any real mini racing going on at Sonoma. Stockton yes.

Allen Settle runs the Stockton stuff, I don't think he had a 110 class this year but things might change for next year

That was my biggest question. I was surprised how much googling it took to find out how to do a sumo conversion. Considering the price of a set of rims, spokes, and tires I'm wondering if a used grom might be the better investment over the long haul. I was just hoping to convert the bike already sitting in my garage.

And if interested, I have a super well sorted Grom all set up for racing with only 1,000 miles on it I'm contemplating selling. Also have all the street parts if you want to get it back on the road.

low budget - what Junkie said (or what I had initially suggested). Depending how deep your pockets are and or how competitive you want to be will drive your options / alternatives. Tell you what, if competitive drives your budget, keep the crf100 for training (circle & 8 drills), and track your race bike.

If you go the Grom route, I suggest buying one already sorted for track or competition. That pretty much goes for any bike you want to compete with. Me personally, after demo'ing the Z125, I prefer the riders position of the Z125 for track and or aggressive back road twisties. Although, the Grom has more after-market support. OTOH, keep in mind, there is a "spec" class (limited mods) for either the Grom or Z125 and alike.

Keep in mind, there are so many more bike options. Best to talk with Allen and get a feel of what classes has the most participation, then sway your decision as to what bike you want to compete with. Or come out to a Mini track day and see what bikes are being ridden. my 0.02.

All great suggestions. I'll be out with the AFM again next year, although I'm hoping to jump into 450s. This big bore superbike thing against the ex #1 plate holders is getting to be too much at my age.

The little Honda was going up for sale in the spring when someone suggested racing mini moto with it. I'll see what classes and prep look like. This was my jumping off point. I thought if I could field the bike for the cost of new tires and some basic parts it might be fun in between.

Just noticed you're in the Reno area. Not sure what tracks are local to you, but if there are, and there is a Race Series, I suggest to talk to the track director, or others that track or race and get a consensus of bikes are raced.

If you have any general bike inquiries though, you can certainly ask here, or of other sources ;)

If you ever feel like coming down to central/southern California, let me know. I ride and staff with M1GP. 110 is a popular class. Google us and you’ll see our schedule for 2019 is already established. There will be several unannounced trackdays in between all of the scheduled races as well. I know we have one member whose daughter races with us from Sacramento; they’re at almost every single event. You could certainly hook up with them and maybe save on transportation costs.
