Template Letter Opposing AB 51

Here is some language that can be used to draft a letter to your representative, reqesting them to oppose AB 51.

Dear Assemblyman ______________,

As a motorcyclist I urge you to oppose AB 51, an act to amend Section 21658 of the Vehicle Code as it is currently written for motorcycle lane sharing. AB 51 includes a 30MPH speed limit when sharing lanes. This speed limit effectively restricts a motorcycle riders ability to react to other vehicles moving near and around them on a crowded highway. To obey AB 51 as written could potentially force a motorcycle rider to maintain an unsafe position next to, behind or in front of an inattentive or erratic vehicle operator.

If there is to be a new law, it needs to be done right. The data needed to codify lane splitting properly is not currently in the hands of our Legislators. Once the final data is in from the Study by Dr. Rice of Berkeley, a member of the California Motorcycle safety committee, I believe there will reasonable data to establish a law for the practice. Getting this right is of utmost importance to the motorcycle community and until the final study is in I urge you to vote no on AB 51.

Contact your CA using this map, or by your address.

As you probably have already heard, Assembly Member Quirk has decided to make AB 51 a two year bill.

I know he has been in discussion with CHP on this bill and on the issue of lane splitting.

He has said their discussions have always been very productive and constructive.

I got word that there is concern from the Governor’s administration on how the bill would be implemented.

So rather than rushing the bill through and facing a potential veto and as Assembly Member Lackey put it, "tarnishing" the issue, Assembly Member Quirk decided to hold it in committee.

The bill will not be heard in committee next week.

His off said they look forward to continuing to work on this issue with us, CHP, Department of Transportation and the DMV during the fall and into next year.

A new date for when the bill will be heard has not been set and will not for some time.

It is going to be idling.

There is no additional analysis or surveys being funded.

My gut feeling is the Governor is saying something like "OK.. we make a law.
How will it be enforced??".

Answer: Same way it is now.

Gov: Well that is not working... Figure it out or I will veto it :rant

Tuesday this Bill is being resubmitted with some super favorable modifications.
Honestly. Looking like it is going to be just what it should be and the guidelines and such will return. :banana :banana :banana

As soon as it is made official we will be discussing getting your Assemblymember to support it. :port
