2006 CBR600RR- kinda neat to sweet

Finally got myself a sweet little Japanese sport bike. This will be a thread of the ups and downs of modifying and owning a mid 2000s CBR600RR

Jacky (named for the orange and black paint/decals) was bought in Berkeley in 2019. Watching the odometer “roll” to 10,000 miles on the first day was a unique feeling as I haven’t owned a bike with less than 30,000 before. I went with the Japanese 600 class because of the price line, reliability, and less expensive aftermarket parts availability. After owning it for a small while I absolutely enjoy the bike and am having so much fun. After all, isn’t that the point?! My only complaint is that it could use more power but that being said I’m loving every minute of it

Before I dive into things too much, while riding around as one does when they get their first sport bike, aka four hours everyday, stopping only for coffee, pee and smoke breaks. I was smelling a bad burning plasticy oil smell. Not knowing what it was and starting to get worried I tore all the fairings off knowing that I was going to paint the fairings anyway. The orange god awful and black. Also, being a very loyal A’s fan, having crappy faded giants logos all over the bike was just simply painful. Enter rustolium and my first wtf moment.

On the inner side of the fairings I found foam that was glued on. Knowing this wouldn’t really protect anything in the event of a crash and knowing that it wasn’t really fire proof as it was melting and admitting an awful smell when the engine was hot. Also found a leak from the oil filter that was leaking on the headers and a few “rough spots” that required body work. So I Threw on a new filter/ o ring, scrapped and tore out all of the foam, tossed the bulky turn signals that were covering up the holes punched in the fairings, and proceeded to rattle can

Foam on fairings is common, I think it's to dampen vibrations against hard parts.

Thanks for the comments. I can see now why they would put foam in and hindsight being 20-20, I could’ve replaced it but it was burning and melting so it had to go. There is nothing worse than a bad headache from burning plastic and the terrible looks from cute ladies that would pull up next to me at stoplights and roll up their windows. Haha

From here on out, I’ll go from rear to front telling the story of what I’ve done so far and will continue with current points of interest when I’m done with back logged tails of Jacky the Honda.

Rear most part was a very recent tire endeavor. Buying the bike from an 18 year old kid who didn’t know much at all; Jacky had a set of crappy discount Perellis. He probably bought them thinking they were good based on the fact that he heard the brand name in a rap song. I wore them out and it was time to get a new set. I’ve always been a big Dunlop fan so I set out to get a q3+ set. Finding a new set, front for $125 and rear for $160 from a reputable seller on eBay I jumped on them. Also, deciding now would be a good time to invest in a set of track stands to lower my future tire change costs, I found an eBay special set ($54 bucks shipped for both front and rear). I’m very happy with them, we’ll see how long they last.

After 180 miles I got a flat on my rear! (Place obscene language here) 30 of which during the windiest day in the Bay Area on highway 4 (very scary). The cause is still unknown... either something tiny or manufacture defect I don’t know. But I never ran over anything other than road reflectors. I know the roads can be shit out here and it isn’t the shops fault at all but long story kinda short, Mosites Motorsports helped me out and got me back on the road with a new shoe for my Jacky! It looks like someone took a straight edge to my tire.. I saw it on both my first and now second Q3+. I’m guessing it’s just the mating place for the rubber but the other Q3+’s I’ve seen don’t have this. Let me know if you’ve got an idea.

I had an '05 that I owned from new and put 34,000 miles on, riding year 'round in Oregon. The RR is a phenomenal bike.

I weigh 165 with gear, do the thing ripped with me on board. Even so, I eventually did find myself wanting more p0wah. So I added a bigger rear sprocket and crucially, a quick turn throttle. zomg it was like a whole new bike!

A quick turn throttle will put anyone into a ditch pretty quickly if they're ham-fisted, but if you have throttle control down they're totally worth the PITA to install.

Honestly those two things and some uprated brake pads are all that bike really needs. (A loud exhaust like the Yosh you have on there goes without saying.) :thumbup

Btw those Q3's look fine to me, although I agree it sucks to see that on a new tire. I've also had at least two, maybe even three flats on almost brand new tires, so I feel your pain on that one.

The last flat I got was on the bottom deck of the Bay Bridge where there's no place to pull over. Rode to the Treasure Island offramp and then to MotoGuild with the 100% flat tire flapping around the rim. Don't try this at home, kids! :afm199

I have an 2005 600RR that is now a race bike, but I've always thought this body style was one of the best looking 600s out there. Stupid reliable as well... I've tossed mine down the track a few times, but she keeps on going!
