Motorbike theft data: SF ain't so bad, and my bikes (BMWs) are safe

Just saw this over on RideApart: 2012 Motorcycle Theft and Recovery Report. Interesting stuff. A couple key takeaways for me: In spite of all the OMG if you park your bike in San Francisco it's practically guaranteed to get stolen!!!, SF didn't even make the top ten, coming in at number 12 in...

Free: Haynes Manual for Toyota Camry, 2007-2011

Replaced my wife's car and just discovered this manual in the garage. It's in fabulous shape—if you've got a Camry and work on it yourself, you need this. Free—come get it. I live in Oakland, work in SOMA.

Another "OMG new bike!" thread: New R1200RT

I know, I know... not a sport bike. But lots of riders here love the RT and I've long had a hankering for one, and this one looks even sweeter than the current one, even beyond the supposedly quite sweet new Boxer engine. Liking the look—shades of the old R1200ST from the side, just a bit...

Yes! SB350 abandoned—Beall won't take action on lane splitting bill in 2014!

Just got confirmation from a staffer in Beall's office this afternoon: "Senator Beall does not plan to take any action on the bill next year in light of the lane-splitting guidelines issued by the California Highway Patrol. He wants to evaluate how well the guidelines work and as well as their...

Great Video on Why Lane Splitting / Sharing / Filtering Helps Keep Riders Safer

Check out this great video from Stop Smidsy, an organization / campaign put together by Maurice Blackburn Lawyers in Australia. Whatever your feelings about personal injury attorneys (maybe it's different there?) the video rocks. Clear, concise illustration of both traffic reduction and safety...

DeLorme InReach - Anyone using this yet?

I just realized that my Spot subscription will renew in October. My primary use is simply so my wife can occasionally check in and see if I'm still rolling, and so I can send the occasional "still shiny side up" message. It would of course be helpful in case of an emergency as well, although I...

First Bikes Across the New Bay Bridge, Tuesday 09.03.13

RIDE CANCELED - bridge looks to be opening tonight at some point Gabe and I and some other folks have been putting together some somewhat fuzzy plans to ride the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge when it opens this coming Tuesday. A few people have messaged and we decided to go ahead and go...

Not another "OMG, can you believe this cager!" thread.

That's right - this is not another thread bitching about some minuscule, totally avoidable thing some other road user (car or bike) did. This is a happy thread. :twofinger Headed out of SF today on the Bay Bridge, just starting to break free of the Bryant onramp mess. Splitting in a very mellow...

Rider down-ish on right side Bay Bridge approach this morning - any info?

Heading into the city this morning, saw a two bikes and a compact car on the right side, a little ways before the toll plaza. One rider standing, other rider sitting on the ground, woman (driver, I assume) standing by the rider on the ground. I couldn't look too much but was confused - didn't...

Advice: getting dirty after many years on the pavement

So... I'm ashamed to have to be asking this... I rode dirt bikes and ATCs back in the eighties. Since I started riding on the street (at 14!), I've pretty much been a street rider, although I've done a fair amount of fire roads and whatnot on bikes that weren't all that well suited to that sort...

    2013 Lane Sharing Survey

I'm excited to announce the 2013 Lane Sharing study conducted by OTS. As far as I know, this isn't available anywhere else yet - I've been hounding my OTS contact and am stoked to have this to share. Check out the summary or download the whole PDF here. This is serious TL;DR stuff - but you...

CHP / OTS lane splitting radio spots

The CHP and OTS continue their excellent efforts to drive awareness of lane splitting and rider safety. Check out the two new lane splitting radio spots here. If you haven't seen the TV commercial, that's here. This is such good stuff - huge thanks to the CHP and OTS and everyone behind the...

A small win for moto parking - car in moto spot actually ticketed!

Was headed down to Crossroads Cafe to grab some lunch and some Camry had parked in both of the moto spots. There happened to be one of the parking enforcement guys cruising by just down the block so I waved at him and said "Can you ticket this guy?" BOOM. Instant retribution, for once! :thumbup

    AMA Position on Lane Splitting

A lot of folks I talk to say things like "The AMA doesn't care about lane splitting" and even "The AMA doesn't understand California motorcyclists." I'm a member, but I've often felt like some of the issues they work on are not in line with my interests as a rider - particularly things like the...

GoPro Hero 2 wavy video issues - help?

I wasn't sure if I should post this in the photos/videos forum but this seems like a good place to ask this kind of stuff, although likely less visible. I have a Hero 2 that's probably about 18 months old now. I don't use it that much and I'm not really a video nerd but lately I've been...

I'll be talking lane splitting / sharing the road on TV this weekend

I'm representing LaneSplittingIsLegal.com on ABC 7's "Beyond the Headlines" this Sunday at 10 AM, talking about lane splitting, sharing the road, moto safety, etc. The CHP, Walk SF and the SF Bike Coalition will also be on the show. Tune in and check it out! Edited to add the video right up...

Is this parking ticket legit? 22500L blocked wheelchair access

Came out from work today to find a ticket on my and another bike. I left kind of late in the day, but normally there are tons of bikes parked where from the manhole cover up - except of course where the hydrant is. For reference, this is near 2nd and Bryant in SF, basically under the Harrison...
