Rush Limbaugh...dead

The Daily podcast did a good episode on Rush

What is interesting in the podcast, is that the Regan administration removed the FCC fairness doctrine that was introduced in 1949 and this allowed Rush's "message" to get out.

"....was a policy that required the holders of broadcast licenses to both present controversial issues of public importance and to do so in a manner that was honest, equitable, and balanced."

Without suffering, or without passion?

Well, I suppose it depends on your take, apatheia specifically goes back to ancient Greece and the Stoics, of whom I am a big fan.

Aside from the western roots in Greek and Roman philosophy, the concept of detachment is very common and you see it in Buddhism, Taoism, Hindusim, etc. in eastern philosophies.

Really throughout history, past systems developed that believe human enlightenment comes from development within, and is not granted by an outside power, have developed some mode of detachment philosophy, although even the Christians had some monastic practices that have sought enlightenment through separation.

For me, it comes down to never letting passions disrupt your functions or waste your energy. They are a phenomenon to be observed and understood as part of the knowing of ones self, but should never be allowed to generate wasteful ideas or emotions, and certainly should never be allowed to stand in the way of rational observation or decision making.

"True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future, not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears but to rest satisfied with what we have, which is sufficient, for he that is so wants nothing. The greatest blessings of mankind are within us and within our reach. A wise man is content with his lot, whatever it may be, without wishing for what he has not.

- Seneca "

This is the bushido, this is the calm in the face of annihilation, the content stillness of the mind, the quiet in the storm.

"There is nothing outside of yourself that can ever enable you to get better, stronger, richer, quicker, or smarter. Everything is within. Everything exists. Seek nothing outside of yourself.

- Miyamoto Musashi"

Rolls with it...
But wouldn't suffering provide the creative impetus and passion provide the drive?

Couldn't adherence to the bushido have inadvertently led to stagnation of Japanese society for a few hundred years while the rest of the world developed industrially?

The whole "pain makes man think, thought makes man wise" philosophy...

:dunno

I would think that only the pathological liars would believe, the rest are just using the stances.

Yes, (I believe) he believed it, and his listeners (the ones I know) believed in his sincerity.

Mr. Bad Example
One does not need to speak well of a being unnecessarily in order to show dignity and grace, rather, falsely claiming positive traits in a person for the sake of an alternative purpose would be insincere, which is also a trait of a being of lesser character.
Nothing I wrote was false.

Sick people. 2+2 does not equal 5

This thread makes me sick. I didn't realize motorcycle riders could be so petty and uninformed about a guy that just died of cancer.

Rush Limbaugh: Donated $100,000 to St. Jude Children's hospital to remain anonymous until he died.

Rush annual Leukemia Cure-A-Thon raised & donated over $50 million

2019- $5 million donate to foundation that paid off mortgages of widows of law enforcement.

I'm sure all you haters didn't know that.

Let's start a running total of donations from all the Rush haters. And I know most of you live in the Bay Area so 2+2 does not equal 5.

Bo Snerdley, a black man, was Rush's producer and call screener for 2 decades. "It burns me to my soul when people sully his reputation with falsehoods, calling him a racist. This man was just an incredible phenomenon -- and we love you, Rush."

I wonder in the sense that as a person progresses in age, witnesses event and meets a lot of people, most tend to get beyond jingoism and lazy thinking.

I would imagine at some point he realized what a crock of shit much of the narrative is but its hard to ignore them Benjamins....

As for charitable giving, it's possible to give generously when one is very rich but still engage in business practices that are cruel and ruinous. Life is complex not simple and so are the people who live it.

Love tha' flame-out tho. We haven't had one in years and....waitaminit, I don't know if I've ever seen someone voluntarily leave since I joined BARF. I guess its proxy for "Cancel my Subscription."

So what? Just because he donated to some causes he liked it absolves him of the rest of the shit and vile rhetoric and conspiracy theories he spewed daily?

This is same shitty tricks corporations and rich individuals use to rehabilitate their name. Do some pretty fucked up shit, donate to a charity, and boom "See I am not that bad of a person/croproation, I donated!" :rolleyes

Then of course let's not forget all these donations are tax deductible, so they reduce their tax obligation and rehabilitate their name. Win, Win!

So go a head and delete your account, but don't kid yourself that Rush was some kind of saint or even marginally a good person because he donated.

Have you ever listened to what this turd pile said? Do you think charitable donations absolve him of the hate he spewed?
BTW, buh bye.

Did anyone make a hateful thread about Ruth Ginsberg on BARf when she died?

I seriously doubt it would have gone on this long as this thread has.

Nice double standards Mods.

I think it is a good question. Casual observation would suggest to me that he probably started sincerely, as his fame grew it became more of an act and less real, just to like make noise and get ratings, then over time, as one gets older, you start to believe your own press and it becomes more real to you.

I don't think anyone said it was, but it certainly seemed to be an intentional misrepresentation. Apologies if your seemingly unrelated admiration for the character was in fact sincere.

I fail to see the double standard you are suggesting?

Sorry to see a dude from 2008 who is still posting drop off like that. I think the points you bring up suggest the man was far more complicated than discussed previously, but I didn't know him, so I am not very well fit to judge who he was.
