New to AFM

Hey everyone,

New to the forum and soon AFM, but not new to racing.

Work relocated me from OH to Sac. I’ve been racing with WERA back east, and now look forward to joining AFM. I will probably still run a few WERA rounds and go back east for GNF... Did a few track days this past summer locally and can definitely get used to the weather! My rain tires have not been used once last season!

I’ve yet to deep dive into the rules, but was hoping to see what classes are available for HWT twin ( I run a Panigale 1199)? Also, any insight on being able to transfer my WERA license, or should I plan on attending a new racer school with AFM?

Look forward to meeting some of you on the track!

Viva Open Twins! There is a strong effort to keep open twins as a thing in AFM, it was last year and will likely be this year. Not sure specifically how your bike is set up, but you can generally run down a class, which means 750 SBK/SS and Forumla 1, plus FP if you have the skills to hang.

Rule book - https://www.afmracing.org/documents/afm_rules_current.pdf

Regarding your WERA license, best to go to the source
- licensing@afmracing.org

Thank you very much!

Definitely have some ways to go for FP but the rest should be fun! After a year off I’m definitely not planning on running at the front. I raced HWT SBK, Open SSTK and F1 back east...

Welcome to AFM! There are 3 other 1199 racers right now in the club. I got a 1199 last year to race it Open Twins and F1 where the bike will be very competitive. Look forward to seeing you at the track!

That’s good to know! I’ll definitely be out there. A couple races a day is all I can probably handle. I had back to back once at Road Atlanta... 90 degree heat and damn near 100% humidity. Both the bike and I barely made it

Granted, we don't have the humidity but 115 degrees is not unheard of. Welcome to the club!

I did experience the triple digits at Thunderhill this summer... I’ll take dry heat any day over humidity.

I do need to figure out a better way to cool the bike. These Panigales require the fan to come off in order to install a belly pan. In most cases it’s ok, but I hate seeing those temps get up to 220+ degrees. Performance radiator would be nice, but not for the prices I see out there.

Fans on/off make no significant difference at speed. Fans on make a huge difference when coming into the pits or sitting at start/finish. 220 is fine, but when you roll up to start line at 220 without a fan you can reach 235 before start. I typically like to get out early on the hot lap which means I sit at start line longer. I don't do that with Ducati or RSV4 because I reach temps close to auto shut down. It is much worse with fans off

Yep, that’s exactly it. I will flush the radiator almost after every race weekend, which tends to help, but water wetter still doesn’t provide the best cooling as compared to Engine Ice in my experience.

for the license portion, as said before, best to email the afm guys JUST to be sure, but I was in a similar boat and didn't have any issues. Just showed them my WERA license, and that allowed me to get an AFM license without needing to run their racer's school or anything.

Sweet! That’s good to know.

Welcome to the AFM !!!

I have a 1199 as well and I would talk to Brian Sharp at Boulder Motorsports about the cooling issue. He built my bikes and I know he did something regarding that heating up issue to mine.

Hi Jeff, Just got mine back from Brian yesterday. Hopefully it will keep running long enough to compete some races :)

Good to know! I’ll see how things go during actual races here and follow up with Brian if things start heating up.

Gavin,

That's great to hear Brian went through it for you...he does great work. You had enough mechanicals last year for a lifetime ! Looking forward to getting back on track this year. See you soon

Welcome to the AFM! If your WERA license is current, no NRS needed at t'all. We do our best to not have back to back races for any particular bike. It's a central point to why our schedule is arranged as it is. Look forward to seeing the big Duc run!

Brian's excellent with the Duc's on this coast. Great idea!

That’s how my 2019 season was. A crash, weird electrical gremlins... we had a really good shop in Indy and they got me back on track. Even with 17k miles on the clock she still pulls wells.
