What do you do to help improve your mental health?

With this becoming more and more prevalent & accepted in society today & people being able to come out and talk about it, what are some of the things you do to help improve your mental health?

Yes I recognize the irony posting this in the sink :laughing :twofinger

- Try to recognize & separate distractions from being productive

- Actually finish jobs or projects I start & not have 1/2 finished crap piling up everywhere or 1/2 cleaned house, laundry, etc.

- Not ignore texts from family & close friends

- Same note, actually reach out to them & others more, & don't ignore important responsibilities from phone/mail/email

- Seek professional help & actually participate in those & other sessions if needed

-Be willing & open to medication if needed

- Understand CBT (not that CBT my fellow fetishists :kicknuts :laughing) and learn how to apply it when I talk down or insult myself or beat myself up (usually prefer someone else does that :shhh :love)

- Step back from the news cycle, Twitter, social media, or just put the phone down/log off all together

- Not work too much, no overtime, etc

So this can be anything from being stressed or burnt out, to full fledged hardcore depression. It also doesn't have to be directly related to you, just anything you can think of that would get your head out of a wrong or bad place. What are some things you do help when it happens?

Meditation is key to keeping one attuned to ones true self and nature. If harmony is sustained with that, the world cannot break you.

start my day by making the bed. It's an easy way to get in an accomplishment.

do a good thing every day, no matter how small.

own my mistakes and apologize

I probably wouldn't take my own advice on the topic. If something is eating at you it would likely help to have a distraction. When I'm riding my bike I'm not giving much thought to anything else.
My gf says meditation keeps her from getting grumpy. Hey whatever, gives me a break from her for an hour or so.

Mental health isn't anything to take likely. Good luck to anyone stressing through hard tough times.

I've found that physical activity keeps me healthy, the more stress, the more strenuous the activity.

Consistent good nights of sleep really help, that's a tougher one to maintain.

Doing things I enjoy like coaching (track), sports photography, spending time with my family and riding.

I hit walls all the time. Mostly work shit vs real life stuff so not much help Linty.

I have thought about options, but a couple of completed things leads me back to a better place. I work to hard. 6 days a week 49 weeks a year with Sunday’s thrown in takes away my mental balance at times.

Procrastination is my enemy and my enemy is strong.

Linty, I cannot imagine what it's like to be paralyzed. The fact that you are aware of your mental state is a huge step in the right direction. Reaching out for help is yet another huge step of awareness and speaks to your character again.

Good on you. Keep coming back here, we'll keep engaging you. You can overcome this. Look up one of our moderators carries an axe. Like you, he was paralyzed in a motorcycle crash. He went on to found a really cool drone company that is focusing on agricultural pollination.

- Learn how to be more effective at choking people and breaking their limbs.

- Read comic books

- Build models

- Ride the bike

- Drive the car

Consequently, the time I was pretty deep in the depression pit, I was literally doing none of the above. Apathy is a bitch. It's a terrible thing when you're in a bad way and the things that should help you and make you better, you don't do them, and you also don't care.

Go hunting.

Go shooting, bow or firearms

Leave CA (I know that will get a few people’s hackles up so I apologize to them).

We are so freakin busy with work, school, karate that time with my daughter and wife often provides exactly what I need to be happy.

Doing what you are doing right now is a great thing for your mental health by simply coming out and asking for help, it's a huge step.

One thing I'd like to add is something you mentioned: don't beat yourself up. May sound like a small and insignificant thing but in reality it's a big thing that people subconsciously do and the effects are profound. Learn to like yourself and pat yourself on the back during tough days for even doing the smallest of tasks.

My six year old has tried all sorts of activities, ballet, gymnastics, dance but has not liked any of them. She said she wanted to do karate so of course we said yes. She loves it and we love where she is studying (Bennati’s in Auburn).
