Who isn’t on Facebook/Instagram/Etc. and why?

100% of the time I pointed out false information the person never responded or even apologized for spreading false info. You'd think after the 10th time they'd think to google shit before posting it.

LOL, not me. They always get all mad and start screaming about, "DAT ISSUE DOH!!"

I always be like, "I am uninterested in your issue, but the meme as presented is overgeneralizing and contains misleading/false data points."

They they go, "WHY YOU NAZI/COMMIE?" Depending on which side they like.

I deleted my Facebook account for two reasons. The first was that the environment cultivated in the Facebook feed was super toxic. Yes, I know there were things I could have done to change around what it showed me, but that is work and I am not going to work for FB for free.

Second, I have some philosophical issues with how they run their company, my values are not aligned with theirs and I figured I would vote with my feet.

I deleted my instagram account because a few months after I deleted my facebook account I got a notice in instagram asking me if I wanted to restore my facebook account. F-that, so I deleted instagram too.

Yes. Much of my decision is based around all of this. While I don’t think leaving the platform will have any impact on them, I figure it’s my small, quiet way of protest.

because some of those people are relatives :nchantr

also, I come from a small town, the reason I like the Bay Area is I am one in 7 million, relatively anonymous. I left small town USA because I was tired of everyone being up in my business and I realized why the hell am I broadcasting my business to everyone so billionaires who I disagree with on a philosophical level can make obscene amounts of money off me.

LOL, i had to unfriend my Mom because of her political posts. :laughing

Just mute 'em. Quite of few close friends/family that post a lot of bullshit. I don't need to unfriend them but I don't need to see their garbage on my feed.

In 2019 I shut down my social media for lent and didn't get back on until that July. :laughing

During the election last summer I took the Marie Kondo approach, does this bring me joy? The answer was no, so I shut it down. :dunno

I have FB, IG and LI. I've curtailed my usage of the first two, especially IG, and LI is strictly for networking within my career industries. Drives my crazy how some people use it as an extension of FB and/or IG.

I am not on Fbook nor IG and never have been. I am paranoid but I do not know if I am paranoid enough. Something about me being "the product" being sold turned my stomach way back in the day when Fbook became popular.

I do have a twitter account that I do not use anymore. This was to follow some of the racers I have met over the years.

Have any of you watched "The Social Dilemma"? Interesting show.

I do have a Twitter account, but it is strictly for ham radio activities and I only follow other hams or radio equipment sellers/manufacturers. :p :nerd

Untitled work in progress
I have a LinkedIn account because at some point about 10 years ago every job I looked at in the Bay Area wouldn't even let you apply without providing your FB or Linkedin account information and getting a FB account was a non-starter for me. I use it to help previous coworkers with their job searches and occasionally to recruit people for my work. I follow some companies and industries and itakes it easier to find news about those things than just searching online for it.

Hasn't helped me find work ever but I've never actually tried to use it in that way. I do notice how in the last couple of years more and more people don't care about being professional anymore. I have noticed what I consider embarrassing comments made by people I am linked to on there and that bothers me a bit.

As far as FB and all the other social media stuff it was quite apparent to me early on how it would do nothing but cause me problems so I never got started with any of it.

I have a friend who at one time told me that had I been on FB I would have known about a mutual high school friend who died suddenly in her early 30s. I explained to him that I actually kept in touch with the few people from my youth that I cared about. I am not interested in pretend relationships.

Over time most of the people I know who were heavily into it have given it up entirely. I don't know if that is because of getting older and it not being as useful anymore or from policy changes that drive people away. Probably both. But overall I have had very few people in my life who were into social media and most of them used it to promote something.

Ditched Facebook mid-year last year. I had been active on it since 2006. Was even a social media manager for about 5 years. COVID, political BS, and watching the Social Dilemma on Netflix helped encourage me to cut the cord. Still on IG, but that's basically filled with friends doing cool stuff and motos. Only thing I miss from FB is Marketplace.

DION! How you doing? :D

So, I hate all Social Media as a general rule. I'm hostile to the term, "Activist," but I am damn near a privacy rights activist. I very strongly believe in, Mind Your Own Business. I never had a MySpace, never had a twitter or instagram account. I do have a facebook account that I got roped into creating by a BARFette over a decade ago in order to get access to the pics album she created from hanging out.

For me, there is a fundamentally histrionic trait to Social Media that I just find distasteful. I don't like celebrating my own Birthday, let alone creating a digital media platform to celebrate my identity.

I believe in being yourself only for yourself. Validation comes only from within as does the path to self improvement.

I like that The Bookface has allowed me to keep some tabs on so many friends that over the years have moved away, but the concentrated hostility it creates towards diversity is very concerning, as is the weaponized social engineering and commercialized surveillance state the platform provides.

By and large, the social impact is certainly a net negative, but the cat is out of the bag, and really one for younger generations than mine to figure out for themselves.

I shall never not mourn the death of personal privacy.

I think I agree with this, definitely about validation.Several years ago I tried to get back on the fb and it was easier to sign up again which supports their numbers like ATT giving you a deal on internet tv and landline.:rolleyes Did ig just so I could impress others with my travels but they dropped me quicker than my first wife when I didn’t accept terms of service. Not missing any of them or their censorship.

I refuse to join any social media site. I want nothing to do with it. My wife spends quite a bit of time on Facebook, but can never find something again that she wants to show me later.

I have a LinkedIn account which I created in 2015 - the last time I was looking for work. The employment consultant that had me create the account recommended linking to hundreds of other people. I think I have 108 connections currently, but a lot of those are relatives and there is no actual point to those connections. It has no value to me right now. I still get people contacting me about jobs once or twice a year, even though the first word describing me is "Retired". :rolleyes

I visit half a dozen forums regularly, though, and BARF is number one. :thumbup

Yeah, Linked in is a good point, I have one of those under my real name, which is weird.

The FB account I created under a phony name and a cloud email address that I then deleted. I have literally been obscuring my identity on the internet since I started using it regularly in like 1995.

There's a reason for this and it has everything to do with recruiting/HR algorithms and nothing to do with any person actually reading your account information. Hell, I get recruiters contacting me for jobs in aviation even though my LinkedIn profile specifically does not mention me having an A&P license, not to mention that it also shows that I haven't touched an airframe since 2006. :dunno

They're graded on how many people they contact, not if those contacts actually respond.

I used FaceSpace and Twatter to keep track of our large extended family and friends across 3 continents.

Before I knew it I had >1000 followers.

I watched them descend into a nasty mess and then watched in horror as previously level headed mates and relatives charged down lunatic conspiracy rabbit holes.

The run up to the 2016 election was the last straw. I binned my FB and Twatter accounts on election night after Trump won.

I have not missed them one bit.

I do have an IG account but generally don't follow people I don't know and regularly unfriend idiots, trolls, bots and anybody who even obliquely mentions religion.

All the more reason to unfriend them. That way they'll notice, eventually (or other relatives will) and either clean up their act or never get re-friended.

Let's face it, every extended family has people you really don't want/need/care to stay in touch with. That's ok. Life is too short to waste any time because of assholes/bitches just because they're related to you.

I see in this thread the biggest reason that people quit it is because of the BS that can easily be filtered/removed.

Like I said, all that sounds like work, and I don’t work for FB. It was easier to just delete the account and so far, I’m not missing it a bit.
