Time to bump this thread again. :)

When I still lived in Folsom, I had worked out about a 100 mile loop that included about 40 miles of dirt roads up around Foresthill. I would take people on that route that were either new to dual sport riding, or that weren't able to get out much. I considered the whole thing to be fairly easy, but after bringing a guy along on the third time I did it and having him dump his bike, I reconsidered.

The guy was riding a BMW F650GS (I think) and claimed that he knew how to ride on dirt roads. So I told him I would meet him down at the bottom of the first section which I considered to be so easy as to hardly be worth a second thought. He tried giving the bike too much front brake in a loose downhill turn and down he went. He was able to ride back out of there okay and the bike didn't need too much in the way of repairs, but it kind of wrecked that ride for both of us. He bailed out as soon as we got back to pavement and I cut the rest of it short too, after riding one more dirt section.

The next time I took someone on that ride whose skills I was unsure of, we went over to Prairie City OHV park for half an hour first and practiced riding up and down their hills before heading for the dirt roads. Everybody found the dirt roads totally easy after that little bit of practice.


I believe strongly that learning to ride in the dirt first gives you much better skills at controlling a bike than only riding on pavement. Both of my sons started riding dirt bikes at age 13 and now have the skills to control motorcycles in most situations they're going to encounter.

I think everybody should have a dual sport as their first motorcycle, but few are willing to go that way. I had one neighbor in Folsom who had always wanted to ride and finally got the wife's approval to get his motorcycle license and a bike once he hit middle age. He didn't talk to me until he had already bought a KLR650. We went on a bunch of rides together and he pressively improved his off road skills. We eventually found the limit of how rough a road he wanted to ride when the KLR bucked him off on a section I didn't have much trouble with on my XR. But after that he was at least able to identify sections he might have difficulty with.

Rode Hollister today. A bit dry and slippery, washboard bumps, poison oak. Not for the meek.

The skills you learn in the dirt will (almost surely once or more) save your life on the street.

A B Garrahan story. I've had the first hand pleasure of seeing BG pass me (hair-scrambles and enduros), many times. It always was a educational experience. I was racing A class and in Enduros AA class starts behind. And if it was a hairsramblhairscramble he was lapping me.
One time I was pushing my well prepped bike to the starting line and I stopped at BGs bike; his rear tire was the most worn out wasted tire that I had ever seen in my entire life. The tyre only had only maybe five of the out most side knobs.
BG spoke (probably to help lift my lower jaw out of the dirt) " it's not a points race. Just for fun and conditioning ". Ha ha ...

Just found this thread. I've given up my street bikes at this point. Everything I have is dirt oriented, two with plates. Recently got the trials bug and just wanted to say that for beginners this could be a great way to learn to ride dirt, with low impact and excellent skill sets. Also great for experienced riders as many of the top enduro riders come from a trials background. Our local club called Sacramento PITS has a riding school coming up this weekend at their property near Donner Summit. Great thread! :thumbup

I need an electric trials bike so I can tool around the neighborhood. The Oset 24 is finally out, now I just need 4 grand...

I stopped at motopia the other day to check it out. I was in the show room trying to balance on it for a little while. I was impressed at how well the suspension tolerated my weight as I'm pretty close to the max. That would be a seriously fun machine for urban trail fun. :thumbup

I wonder how firm they are on the rider weight limit....

Not very, there are plenty of reports (and YouTube videos) of full size adults hooning around on the slightly smaller Oset 20, which only had a weight limit of 100lbs.

The Oset 24 has a weight limit of 198 so you can prob double that :D

I rented a dirt bike in Costa Rica after a month and a half of riding a street bike. Accidentally ended up taking it up miro mountain with no prior off-roading experience -- definitely a different kind of ride and a little scary at first but made it out alive with a great experience and a whole new perception of riding.

Been wanting to get a dirt bike for a while now. But living in the bay area, I have no room for it. I heard nothing but good things about it, especially on improving control. Maybe one day I can afford a bigger garage... one day!
