M-65 was also worn by Arnie, in the first "Terminator (1984), by Al Pacino in "Serpico (1973).

But, the most memorable, the one that stands out is, ...

this.

Oh, by the way, why "Pat Garret and Billy the Kid" is mentioned?
It has nothing to do with M-65.

It's because of this scene.

At 1:18, you can clearly see buck shots flying into the camera's direction.

When I first watched this movie, it made me wonder, how Peckinpah filmed this.

Later on, I found out how he did it.
And I used the same technique in this video.
(Water gun directly firing into the camera.)

Back to "M-65".
In the world of cinema, for some reason, it's always worn by an outsider, a drifter, a loner, ... , never by someone who's life is filled with happiness.

Rolls with it...
The "damaged" or "deranged" Vietnam vet was a fairly well used trope in Hollywood throughout the 70's, rather unfairly. The M-65 was an easy costume accessory.

To Stallone's credit, he addressed some of prejudices and stereotypes, while inadvertently reinforcing some, in the first Rambo movie, before they went all cartoonish.
