Seriously considering...

As I get older, I am contemplating my next thrill. I started on dirt as a kid, owned a bunch of different street bikes, played on the track a bit, even got myself a Hog. I don't really have a desire to get back on dirt, although I'll never turn down an opportunity! But this Adventure riding is intriguing! I find myself scoping the ads for a used GS 1200...I need to check this out!

Don’t know anyone regretted their GS! Between the GS and the time of life I found myself riding more. There’s also something about being on a dirt/gravel/sandy road in nowhere Utah and seeing only 1 other vehicle in an afternoon. It’s also practical to answer the question; where does that road go.

Would you consider something not quite as big and heavy?

In particular, what I ride. :)

I've done one adventure ride with a rider on an R1200GS and he was ready to bail out before we got to the "good stuff". I talked him into at least riding up to where normal cars could easily get to at Sierra Buttes, then showed him the paved way down while I continued with the rocky hill climb up to the top. And that was on a 990 Adventure.

The 790R is significantly better for the type of riding that I like than the 990 was. I also have an XR650L, which is about 90 pounds lighter and has 3 or 4 inches of additional suspension travel. Other than when I've had to pick up the 790R (once) or had to turn it around in a tight spot, there haven't been any cases where I wished I was on the XR. It handles rocky, rutted uphill roads just as well.

If you intend to do mostly pavement and easy dirt roads, then don't listen to me. But if you intend to ride any more serious dirt, at least look at the trade-offs of a lighter, more dirt friendly bike that can still easily handle long freeway runs and twisty mountain roads.

There are many different kinds of adventure riding. What are you looking for? Single track up a mountain to camp at a quiet spot? Smooth dirt roads in a National Forest?

Can you pick up a GS1200 after you drop it? Reason I don't ride a literbike in the dirt. For the tame stuff I suppose the GSA is good. I mean they do some crazy stuff with em. I have a hard enough time picking up my DR650.

Another thing I couldn't stand dropping a large amount of coin on an ADV bike and then thrash it off road, probably why you see a lot of those Starbucks GSAs =P

I suppose I would ride a GSA on the TAT. If you are going to be riding with buddies a GSA would be fine because if you drop it you can get help picking it up, if you are riding solo a mid/heavy weight dualsport like a DR650 or a mid weight adv bike like that new Tenere or the baby Tiger is what you'd want. Maybe I should see if I can pick up a GSA sometime I heard they don't fall all the way over because of the cylinders.

My 790R passes the "can you pick it up" test. :teeth

It's more difficult above 9000 feet where *I* run out of air...

I love my 2014 GS with 86K miles and handles like a bike half its size, but it's still about 600 lb. and very unforgiving on any dirt beyond a fire road!

Congrats on getting into the adv riding. Super fun stuff. I ride an ancient yet very capable ktm 950 adventure. Just turned 60k miles, and I love it, but rode a 790r the other day and I now cant stop thinking about that bike.

Now can you pick that up fully loaded with adventure gear and fuel? =P

Haha I dumped my DR650 at Alabama Hills in the sand with a full tank of gas, 6.6 gallons of gas and man was it a bitch to get back up.

A lightly loaded DRZ is a joy to pick up when it's gets lazy and tries to take a nap.
