The 113th Season Opener ride report by the
SFMC's 2017 Road Captain: :party

"We had 30 who came out for our Season Opener today including all 4
prospects. Coffee at 9, ride at 10 after a picture and key searching.

We slabbed down 280 to Edgewater and Canada Rd. Up 84 to Kings Mountian
road. Lots of bicycles, redwoods, and a few slow cars. At Skyline we met
up with Clay and stopped for a smoke break. Down a gravelless Tunitas
Creek to highway 1 south and Stage Road South. At Pescadero Susi-Q joined
the group and we took Cloverdale Road past Butano State Park to Gaza
Creek Road and then south on 1 to The Highway 1 Brewery.

I had let them know we were coming with a group of 25 at noon and they
added additional wait staff for us and hit the ground running when we
showed up. They serve good bugers and good beer. We all ate and fueled
up by 1:30. Kind of amazing for such a large group.

From there half
the group went thier own way and the other half followed the Road Captain
past the Pigeon point lighhouse (best wildflow viewing) and up Pescadero
Road to Alpine Road and then down Page Mill Road.

The Weather was perfect, Sunny but not hot. The group traveled along at a
spirited clip and overall all riders road with intent and purpose. The
group stayed together. We ended the ride at the clubhouse at 3 and
socialized for a few hours over beer, wiskey, and bubbly water.

Tucker, Ben and Darrell made destination "sua sponte".

Kalle Hoffman's 1937 Indian Chief American Class winner 2017 Quail Motorcycle Gathering

I also talked to Bryan Harley of American Iron Magazine. He did a good job capturing my story.

http://www.aimag.com/2017-quail-motorcycle-gathering-winners-photos-review/

"In the American Class, Kalle Hoffman captured top honors with his art deco 1937 Indian Chief.

“I’ve had the bike for about eight years. I bought it as a project and restored it. It took me about three years to get the bike on the road. I got the bike on the road for the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge,” said Hoffman. His compelling back story provided further motivation to complete the restoration.

“The first civilian bike to cross the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937 was a 1937 Indian Chief and that bike was ridden by [AMA Hall of Fame racer and San Francisco Motorcycle Club life-member] Hap Jones. I’m in the San Francisco Motorcycle Club and it’s very close and dear to our group as far as that our group carries on this tradition. This year is the 80th anniversary of that bike and the Golden Gate Bridge so I decided to complete the bike this year to commemorate it."

"Curtis Stapleton of Lavish Lines and Pinstriping painted my bike. He's located in Sunnyvale. He put his heart and soul into the bike and it shows. I'm grateful. https://www.facebook.com/lavishlinespinstriping."

“Our rider, Jim Hoogerhyde,
has an impressive resume of
race wins and landspeed records himself”,
said Richard Hatfield, Lightning CEO,
“but Bonneville Speed Week in August is lining up
to be a special event. We look forward to working
with Jim to replace the ?? with an exciting number
for our LS-2?? RR”.

(guess this is a pic of the LS-218 ...?)

"With this first, record setting test completed,
Lightning is now targeting SpeedWeek at Bonneville,
August 12-18, 2017, to determine just how fast this
new production RR edition of the Lightning production
HyperBike will go. Lightning is targeting the
replacement of the two question marks in our new bikes name,
with maximum speed numbers from our official time slip.
Lightning’s new design has the potential to smash our own
production bike world speed record of 218 mph[, set in 2012].

Go "Slim" Jim Hoogerhyde! :ride:thumbup:party

1914 Harley-Davidson in Golden Gate Park ...

... we get families reaching out to us from
time to time with old family photographs ...

1914hd.jpg

1914hdb3.jpg

The folks in these photos are
Alexander Craig (perhaps an SFMC member)
and Pat McCarthy (an SFMC member in the 20's).

They were sent to us by Roger Craig,
the grandson of Alexander Craig.
We assume the woman in the second
pic, in the plaid dress, is a daughter ...
note the side-saddle rear seat ...

Roger Craig wanted some
help from the SFMC to identify
the motorcycle in the pics and
SFMC life-member Red Fred
provided the following analysis:

Interesting.

The photos are reversed, or a mirror image.

If you could read the Harley-Davidson on the tank,
it would be backwards. We are looking at the
primary side of the bike, and that is on the left.
So this negative is transposed.

We have a 1914-ish single speed model, with some very,
VERY expensive accessories! The speedo almost cost as
much as the bike! It is driven via a cable to that exposed
gear on the front wheel.

You can see the spedo-drive cable coming down, and the
small gear at the end of the right-angle-drive is at about
1:00 of the drive gear on the front hub.

The Acetalyne lighting is pretty cool also, complete with the tail light,
that was fed via a small rubber hose from the handle bar mounted tank.

A shame they don't show the tandem passenger seat. It just may be a
side saddle unit, of which I have only ever seen 2.

The thing that is interesting to me is that the bike appears
to be a single speed. And therefore I say it's a 1914, and not a 1915
from these photos. Because in 1915, Harley-Davidson offered a 3 speed
transmission. Since these folks forked out a lot of money for all the
extras, they surely would have purchased the 3 speed model
over the single speed.

Sure looks like Golden Gate Park also?
