Route 66

Interested in traveling Route 66 in the coming year, plan is to head down the coast from San Francisco to Santa Monica and turn "left." I have relatives in North Carolina I'd like to visit so I don't plan on traveling all of 66, figure I'll go as far as New Mexico.
Any tips, suggestions or mapping hints would be much appreciated!

I've ridden every inch of Route 66, and I have to say that you really don't want to bother east of New Mexico anyhow. By the time you get to Tucumcari (A completely depressing shell of a town) you've run out of anything worth seeing on the Route.

It is worth hitting the CA and AZ sections, though.

In CA Route 66 is a jumping off point for one of the BDR sections. Might be the case in other areas that you can spice up 66 with some adventuring in the dirt.

Not *quite* there yet

Probably stick to pavement and not-so-hairy dirt & gravel for the time being. I will be looking into dual-sport, ADV classes at some point. I know the Beemer is quite a nimble machine (in the right hands) but I think I've got a ways to go before I feel comfortable doing a lot of off-road riding.

Thanks for all the encouragement!
