PSA Big Sur off road, road closures

South Coast Ridge, Cone (north coast ridge), Los Burros and Plaskett are all closed. Looks like through Oct. 19. I was just down there and was pretty surprised to see the below sign. After talking with Ed the miner, who has a claim up there somewhere, at the Los Burros entrance on 1, I decided to ride Los Burros to S. Coast Ridge to N/F. It wasn't until I got to the top, that I realized it could've been up to $5,000 fine or jail:wow

The thing is, I saw a bunch of people walking on the road and camping, closer to N/F and it looks like it's supposed to be closed to foot traffic as well. Covid 19 closures.

Forest Order: 05-07-51-20-17

16 USC 551 and 36 CFR 261.50 a and b.

I'm diggin the wr, it took a little getting used to, but I really like it now. Not super freeway capable, but great where I need it to be. Any time you want to borrow it, just let me know.

Ed the miner was convincing, I wasn't going to ride it, but he had very strong opinions about everything and said "if anyone gives you grief, just say you are looking for me" and I thought, yeah okay.:ride

It was supposed to a multi day, I wanted to check out that BLM land near Lockwood and maybe on to the dirt roads off of 25, but I inexplicably got really ill last night and spent most of the day curled up in the fetal position, until i had enough gas in me to make it home. Big bummer.

How's the WR250R compare to the DR650 since you've had both? I always wanted a WR250R for the rougher stuff, so I can do dual sport events and do the hard routes. I'd imagine you'd miss the torque of the DR650.

Man this is messed up, sure when HWY 1 gets obliterated by slides they want state funding to help them fix infrastructure. But otherwise its locals only attitude in Big Sur.
Los Padres NF is on the list of places where the MVUM for recreation has been sized down to 0 miles.
I get they are trying to stop squatters / homeless and 'others trashing the place' from permanently parking up on those road in those camp sites. But doing it while f-ing the rest of us is NOT cool.

'Great', reading at the end more GATES!!!! Because once they go up do you think they will come down again? or open ever?
Everyone in the state is trying to grab 'their' piece of paradise, free country to go anywhere* (*so long as its not into 'my' piece of heaven)

I'm not the best person to give a comparison, I'm pretty new to dirt, unskilled and slow, that said here's my take:

WR engine is rev happy, it really seems to shine winding it up and I need to shift a lot compared to the DR. The tractor torque of the DR is gone on the WR and replaced by revs. Where I could just leave the DR in 2nd and call it day, I'm constantly going from 1st to 4th on the WR. I also seem to spin up the rear a lot more on the WR. Way less vibration than the DR too.

It's lighter and feels it. This is paramount for me. It's just easier or at least more comfortable for me in the dirt, because of it's weight. I can also ride it faster in the dirt, not by much, but faster.

The suspension is much better, off the shelf, on the WR and I'm still trying turning knobs trying to get it perfect. I've accidentally hit rocks, roots and ruts in the shadows, and the WR just takes it, where the front may have been deflected on the DR. One big BUT, I'm a feather weight and the rear shock wants to buck me off on the bigger bumps, and I'm maxed out on the rebound and preload is backed way off. That said, when I had it loaded down with camping gear and a couple of liters of H20, it actually helped. A revalve may be in my future.

It's easier to move up and ride on the tank, on the WR.

I slogged it from King City to Oakland on 101 and can say it's bearable, but the DR is much more comfortable on the freeway and feels more planted at speed. At an indicated 75 the WR's front end felt twitchy.

A four gallon tank on the WR would you give you the same range as 6 gallon tank on the DR. I was getting about 42 mi/gal on the dr, I'm getting 60 on the WR with mixed freeway, twisty, dirt riding. Got 70 on one stretch.

It's taller, by a lot. I actually lowered mine by about an inch.

Seems more refined than the DR.

One oddball observation, I can rail the WR in twisties on Shinko 244's whereas running the same tires on the DR, I didn't feel as comfortable pushing it.

Overall, I feel like I've sacrificed some road comfort for more dirt comfort.

That's my take thus far.

Yeah, I sort of feel the Covid19 is a convenient excuse. Edit: The closures say Covid 19 emergency closure, but that blog and that news piece, tell something different. That linked opinion was telling. Heck the residents of plasket were able to get a permanent gate and now it's going to spread. The old miner guy I was talking to, called it gentrification of Big Sur, folks move there and then want to privatize it. He was also adamant that it was a public road, paid for by public dollars and the public are entitled to access to it.

That said, it was bonkers how many people were there, I've never seen so many folks camping around there.

One thing that I thought was interesting is the sign that said 4x4 only! Towing costs $2000+ Makes me think more than one gaper got themselves in a sticky situation.

Check out the comments in the article I linked, pretty telling..... :mad
If we just sit and let them do it then post like this will never happen:

Similar to water erosion, little by little the accessible public lands get smaller and smaller

Thanks for the comparison, you haven't ridden it in sand have you? Like deep sand? The DR is a bit of a handful to ride in the sand, I've learned to live with it, but I rode a XR400, Beta500, and DRZ400 in the sand it was so much easier to ride in the sand with them.

I've ridden a WR250 once on pavement with some freeway. I thought it was alright it gets through the freeway ok. Tempted to get one and do LAB2V with the hard splits. It takes too much effort to ride the DR650 in LAB2V. The Red rock canyon section would definitely be easier =P

I don't really have any relevant input when it comes to sand, if I were a betting man, I'd say it is easier than the DR, but I don't have any real experience. If you do want to get one, I'd suggest you search the valley and Sacramento too, the smaller dual sports seem to get snatched up quickly, here in the bay area. Good luck.

I fear this too, so I rattled off a quick letter to the forestry service, voicing my concerns. I suspect nothing will come of it, but who knows.

Got a quick (non) response:

"Thanks Matty for the message and your perspectives. You have indeed hit the core challenge of finding that right balance of providing safe and sustainable recreation access. District Ranger Short is very cognizant of these challenges. He (we) will continue working with USFS staff and partners to respond to these immediate issues and coordinating with stakeholders to prepare for long term planning to address the visitor use challenges we are experiencing.

We also need to take the long view and through more comprehensive visitor use planning on the Monterey Ranger District and the rest of the Los Padres National Forest.

Yea I read the comments, and none of it seems to out of hand or even overly selfish. They're clearly open to sharing, but having an invasion like what's happening now is over the top.

The land use and infrastructure isn't designed to handle the emptying of the cities. And along with a tragedy of the commons, people will just take.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Rolls with it...
Yeah... FB pics of it showed some of the stupid stuff they were doing regarding fires, poops, trash, spent glow sticks, etc....

This is why we can't have nice stuff.
