hee hee, dude you missed some crazy action. it was at the Stardust hotel in their "new" arena. Kickboxing vs. Muay Thai Battle of World Champions. Master Toddy was there along with other celebs like Ray sefo of K1 fame. I even got to meet Tsuyoshi Kosaka, Japanese Rings & UFC champ (he'll be featured in the UFC Xbox game :teeth ).

Wicked fights, we're talking full thai rules knees and elbows allowed. Jongsanan Fairtex won his match and it was no cakewalk, he had to battle it out the distance. Got cut above the nose with an elbow then it was payback time with him throwing his elbows in the clinch in devasting fashion, opponent straight to hospital after. this was some of the best muay thai I've ever seen in my life.

Many interesting bouts, one female card even that some may call the fight of the night. It was classic thai style vs. full contact kickboxing style and the shorter kickboxing gal, Gina, was hanging in there. I was screaming my lungs out rooting for her! In the third round she went down hard to a kick in the ribs though. "Get Up! Get UP!", but no way as ref. waved it off and match ended to tko. Met her after the event but didn't get to talk long, hope to see her again, she is a real warrior not to mention very easy on the eyes. (I thought she looked like ashley judd kinda' whoa)

Prior to that fight another guy went down in the same fashion. I thought he deserved a count in this case and after the match he was able to jump over the ropes when exiting, which shows to me maybe he should've been allowed to continue. but anyways fighter safety is first and foremost the refs responsibility and one more blow could've been it so fight another day is the right call. the thai fighters were decimating their opponents even though many times they were outweighed and out reached. toughest fighters on the planet, period.

Now then, here is a chance of lifetime I just heard about, it's not advertised yet. This saturday the
Fairtex Gym in D.C. will be hosting a night of Muay Thai, complete with food and party after the fights (to celebrate Jong's Victory in Vegas). Special guest will be... Master Toddy and the ISS team! They're coming up from Vegas to visit with some of their amateur fighters (maybe some of the guys from Thailand will play too that would be great). $30 at the door and I guarantee if you're a fan of muay thai this is a must see. Bring your cameras!

ps. no short guy syndrome here. ex. Bunkerd Fairtex, stands like 5' 4" fights at 130 lbs. probably one of the most respected guys out there with over 350 fights, numerous titles and thailand championships. he is a tiger in the ring but you'll not meet a nicer guy I promise.

let me know if anyone here wants to go! whoo hoo!

Sawadeeka! Glad to see some interest! Saturday "Smoker" competitions usually start at 2pm but I will check on this special event since they're planning on having thai food etc. If anything it will be as close to being in Thailand as some may ever get - the fights, the music, the people and of course the beauty of Muay Thai competition!

(personal stuff edited, too immodest, for shame!)

I don't know about CV but can highly recommend Concord Kickboxing, see Daniel Docto, Sr. Muay Thai instructor. He's a great guy and positive roll model. Otherwise if you can cross into SJ then check out American Kickboxing Academy and Frank Shamrock. As far as height/weight see the Fairtex site for Ehn Fairtex's personal stats. what a great match to coach you, ya know? oh wow, not to forget Cung Le's SanShou also in SJ area.

Ok, will try to get more solid details on this Sat. No stupid moves on the bikes till then you all or you might miss out, ok!?! :D

Thanks for all the info. helps a lot. I'll see what I can find. I've been wanting to get back into something competitive like Kick boxing for a while now. I just turned 24, constantly keeping in shape, running and weight training. Hopefully I still have time to gain enough experience to be good.

cool, glad I could help :) take your time and keep an open mind in your journey as well. if you decide to compete then karate or amer. kickboxing may be a good way to get your feet wet - (different from when I started, it was bare knuckle then even for the kids!) but now the lack of low kicks below the waist, no knees, hell they don't even allow sweeps(!??!!) is surely frustrating no matter what style. not to mention bad habit forming (seek the truth!)

about the only true tournaments now are the shidokan and sabaki challenge (forerunner to the UFC in Denver). but that's definitely the hard way and not for everyone. Definitely not. I didn't survive even the basic training w/o damage but got a much later start not to mention personal challenges. but overcame and did well in the dojo IMO, enough for me to defeat some demons. (I officially retire from full contact anything, forever :teeth )

but training can be a lifelong passion and like motorcycling I'm planning on enjoying both into old age in whatever fashion I can manage.

At a healthy 24 you will do much better competitvely anywhere. As inspiration, my friend and coach Ken fought for the Sabaki Challenge (bare knuckle knockout karate) mdlwt. title for 5 years, meeting defeat each time but never giving up for another year. Last year 2001 at 30 y.o. he was golden and defeated all! I will never forget these times.

Otherwise, normal smoker type kickboxing competitions in Calif. require headgear, mouthpiece, thai metal cup, 10-12 oz. boxing gloves, bellypads, shorts and shinpads to keep it reasonably safe. This is what we should see Sat. although there may be some special no-pad fights just like for title matches, maybe even by first timers.

Good luck on your path no matter which way it goes.

ps. Hey! what did you think of the StrikeForce event in SJ!?!

update: Doors 1 PM Event starts at 2PM Amateur Muay Thai fights $30.00 Special Main Event at 7PM SF boxer Espinoza vs. Oakland boxer "the Killer" No Host Bar for 21+.... Live Thai Music... Authentic Thai Cuisine....bring your cameras and take pics with the Thai ChampionsFor more info call the Fairtex Gym @ 1-650-994-5025 2995 Junipero Serra Blvd., Daly City, right off of I-280

Hope to see you there!

TTT

this should be way cool. small venue but that means you are right up close vs. big event = airfare + hotel + $$$ ringside seats

Fairtex is rolling out the red carpet for the Vegas Thailand team and y-o-u this weekend!

---

ok who got to go? it was like a full day & night of fights! there were at least three crunchy bikes out front and a cherry buell in the lot. the crunched duc did a mini burnout after the free afternoon smoker fights but didn't attract much attention. next time you gotta REALLY light em up :teeth

the nighttime paid event rocked. this was one of the best crowds too, gotta' love local shows, the fans really get into it. of course I was yelling my brains out too just can't help it! heck, the SF fighters did so well against the Vegas team and I'm sure they'll be back for another go 'round. Fairtex plans on making these night time cards an every other month event. The free smoker competition are the last sat. of every month, 2pm.

Hope to see you there!

K1 Gran Prix World Championships 5/3 at the Mirage Hotel, Las Vegas. ho yeah!!!
